Are the VST effects that come with Cubase only usable in Cubase or can you open them in a VST host like Komplete Kontrol?

The Steinberg plugins will only work in Steinberg apps, unless they were bought as a retail item. The ones that come bundled in Cubase will only work in Steinberg programs.
I wish they would do a sale on UPGRADES. I just upgraded Nuendo ($200) and I still need upgrades on Wavelab and Cubase. But, It's too much money right now so they have to wait.

So, like, is Cubase good? Should I buy this?

People always rag on PT saying it's an inefficient resource hog and whatnot. If I fire up Cubase am I suddenly going to be able to run my buffer 2^(-3) times faster or something?

Darn, just bought Cubase, just a month ago. No exp with PT but I will say that the fans on my 2016 MBP go nuts when running even a simple project in Cubase (Superior 2 + six audio tracks, no processing even), whereas in Reaper the same project won't tax the system at all, almost as if no app is even running.

It's a great program, but in terms of "resource hog," it's not as efficient as Logic or Reaper on Macs. Cubase tends to run better on PCs than Macs historically. Cubase and Logic have a lot in common IMO. They were both coded in Germany at similar times, and they are more alike to each other than either is to Pro Tools. If you're looking for something that's crazy efficient, Reaper apparently rules the roost. Personally, I'm a Logic man since leaving Pro Tools 17 years ago. (Cue Leslie Neilson in "The Naked Gun": "Has it been that long...??!!")

I work in Nuendo and Cubase. I wanted to like Reaper, because of the speed, but so far i just didn't gel with it. Cubase/Nuendo are very feature rich. I've been on it since Nuendo 2 (now 10) and i haven't scratched the surface of what it could do. But, it does all i need and more. I had been on Logic before that (emagic). That was the most illogical software I'd ever worked with.

I thought I would try the 30 day demo but it looks like you need to buy their dongle to run it. Anyone know if I am mistaken about that?

Not sure about the demo but yes it normally runs off a sync syncrosoft dongle. I think there is a light version that runs without one.
Edit: you might be able to run it with a soft license through the syncrosoft app.

Well, if I’m gonna jump DAW’s, isn’t going to be a better price. Damnit. It’s going to take so much time and effort to relearn well enough to be as fast as I am on PT’s now.

Cubase is awesome and super configurable. You can setup key commands and macros to keep it close to PT (that’s what I did). Give it some time, watch a few videos etc, you’ll love it.

Crossgrade price (from PT) is $170. How can I pass that up?

^ i agree, an upgrade discount would have been very nice.
i still have a few working macs with cubase that still work going back 25 years, i've transferred a couple of people's midi and audio song files to work on newer 9.5 set ups.

I sure don't miss those annual $200 update fees, LOL!

I'm a Cubase dude, for a long time now, I recommend it. monkeyxx, if you don't mind me asking: I've been a longtime Cubase user as well. I use it mostly for audio, but also use drum VST's and the occasional Kontakt VST's. I also occasionally trigger drum VST's from audio drums using its midi assignment function. I use a lot of channel tracks, group tracks, FX tracks and VCA faders with a lot of plugins. So, I have to use the highest buffer sizes at times. However, I never hear latency, and since I have an RME AES-32 audio interface with Totalmix for monitoring, I never have latency issues for overdubbing. I can upgrade from Pro 8.0 to Pro 10 for $100.00,. So, I was wondering, for what I do, what I would be gaining with the upgrade? If anybody else cares to respond that would be great as well.

Since then they've added some features but I don't remember where 8.0 was at. Some of the newer stuff is render in place (essential), the newest version has time alignment which I'd want, there's a sampler track, they've upgraded the drum vst thing
