I’ve got an A100 that I inherited from my grandfather. Grew up playing it with the built in speaker never knowing it was “that” organ. Probably took until I was 13 or 14 to realize it was the combo of the organ and Leslie that did “it”.
I’ve had it since and will never part with it. Toughest part is a good tech. The one I used for years passed away 3 years ago so I just hope something doesn’t go on the fritz with it. First time I pulled the back panel off it I was in awe haha.
My mindset changes when I’m playing a controller vs an instrument. Not sure why, maybe it’s my personal hang ups I should get over or something, but I’m WAY more inspired to play when I’m sitting at a Hammond, Rhodes, Wurlitzer, etc than I am when hitting a Nord or a midi controller and screwing around with a mouse.

That shouldn't be disregarded. There IS a difference in how it makes you play, and how it inspires you. And bottom line, that's HUGE.

Had a guy bring in a real Leslie with the drawbar Nord one time.. I've got a Voce V3 that has the Leslie multipin connector out for the 122, and it sounds great - BUT - it lacks a little something, and it won't drive the leslie hard enough... So close....but so far....... Yes, makes sense. Nothing out reals real in my world either.

What types of maintenance needs were showing up? When I had my M3, which was a few decades old even then, there were no problems ever - except when it sat unused for a long while and refused to turn over, much like a car I suppose. All I had to do was manually turn the tonewheels to loosen them up and re-oil it. Fired right up and ran like a champ until the day it left me. I would imagine there would be more maintenance involved with the Leslies ( which is what I've been putting off with my 147 - belts/tubes/caps/ etc.... ) Is a B3 a good client draw for a commercial space? The reason I started this thread is that I have a lead on a B3 with a pair of Leslie 21H, along with some other stuff. A distant cousin of mine just inherited a load of music gear from a dear friend of his who passed away and owed him some money. He's got the stuff stored at his departed parents' house that he's trying to clean up for sale, and I saw it all last week while I was there doing some electrical work for him. All the gear is pretty beat up from years of gigging - I mean, really beat up - , but my "cousin" is seeing $$$ as he tries to unload it all. I'm toying with the idea of bartering for the B3, but it will depend upon how greedy he gets. The guts were missing on one of the Leslies, so who knows about the other one. There's a Clavinet with rusty hardware and torn tolex, some model Korg synth, a Hammond X2 and two Wurly 200 - one of which is in a Calzone road case - along with a few amps and some type of Farfisa - which was buried under a bunch of crap. My cousin is not a musician, so he is not treating these instruments with much respect, as they're basically thrown into a pile on the basement floor. The B3 is on dollies in the garage, and covered with a moving blanket, which I was able to lift high enough to see that it is filthy, scratched up, broken half-moon switch, etc... BUT, if it sounds as gnarly as it looks, hmmmm. The pedalboard for it was also in the basement. Anyway, I told my cousin not to do anything until he talks to me first. We'll see.

In terms of Rhodes and Wurlitzer sounds, I do find my Nord can get surprisingly close, though Scarbee beats it sometimes. I don’t have a Princeton here at my place, but I prefer it to a Twin. A Nord through a Princeton is a beautiful thing. Something about the headroom and saturation. I prefer the immediacy of playing the Nord to a VI, but it’s also nice to record the audio and MIDI at the same and try various VIs after the fact.
Right now, I just have my Nord hooked up directly to the DIs in my Stam 1073MPA with Sowters full time. Sounds lovely.
But in terms of B3, yes, nothing feels close. A real B3 always threatens to get out of control as you play it, like it might overwhelm you and surround you at any moment. It’s alive.

I have a feeling Scarbee would sound great reamped through a real amp. I’ve been meaning to try setting up a room mic in control room and re-recording different VI’s straight from my monitors.

Yeah, I feel certain you're right, Tbone81. I've never bothered to reamp Scarbee, but it's been on my mind to do it sometime. I think it would sound pretty amazing. Even just running it out through monitors into the room and micing the result would sound really good, I imagine.

My keyboard player. He has 5 of them. Mick Jagger was once punched in the face by Charlie Watts when he referred to the latter as 'my drummer'. Better be careful.
That said, nothing beats a real one but I have to make do with plugins (VB3 or B4). Sending them through a Marshall amp with spring reverb and two Dynacord CLS22s or, alternatively, a NEO Ventilator, often does the trick, especially when they're in a mix.
