Few of us have been discussing is in another thread...the SA 9000 one. Its time for it to have its own thread.
Most of us didn't like it didn't have the HPF filters included. I think Stam added them though after we raised concerns.
Would like to know how deep the preorder list is before I put a deposit down.
Overall looks great. I like the SSL eq a lot.

It’s got the filters price is right but when do we start the pool on actual ship date?

I wouldn't care when it shipped if I got a unit for 390 bucks. Not like Stam hasn't ever not delivered. Then again I'm very useful to this kind of business model. It is very common in the off-road Fab world and I've waited 14 months for a rear bumper before. And I doubt Stam will go bankrupt any time soon too. If stam could give us numbers on how many have been ordered I'd jump in possibly. That would be a nice thing to integrate into the site is how many slots are left or something like that.

He's not going to adjust the price with the advent of the filters?

Alright, well it is definitely on the site so I went ahead on the assumption that I'm in the first 100. stam let me know if that's not the case, please.

But I guess there’s only one way to find out.

I think Josh just uses the preorders to float himself an operating loan to order parts etc. and cover labour on the first build and includes his operating profit. I draw a parallel with all the plug in companys’ sales . What sale their retail prices they made up, when they want funds, they have a sale, as their development costs are 100% sunk and their overhead arguable low, but the sale represents a significant in flow of fresh cash no interest no hassle?

Prepare to be laughed at, the thought that money is an issue.. its like clockwork. Of course difusing / deflating that thought is a great way to ... nevermind.

I’ll say this, there’s no way that starting production on new products doesn’t delay existing products...unless...every time you hire new staff, they’re only hired and segregated to work on the next new product...which is just another kind of awful when it comes to biz models...
The truth is though, no one actually knows. It really is an interesting case study in small business practices.

He’s also making the best gear for the price. Gee, I wonder how! Maybe by saving on customer support, company financing, marketing (because his products are the talk of the town for a year!), quality control, shall I go on? Cue sarcastic response from the owner of the company in 3-2-1...

Is the QC comment actually fair? I have seen some issues reported but the very very large majority seem to eventually get units that function well and that they are pleased with ?
I certainly see other companies that also have some reported qa issues, are Stam’s truely worse. I don’t know that that is the case ? We also know that he has strengthened his international tech support over the last year .

We also know that he has strengthened his international tech support over the last year . He was happy to claim publicly that “only” two SA2A had caught fire. That does it for me. Mine arrived with a very noticeable 50Hz hum. That’s QC right there. Also mine didn’t have the VU meter even remotely calibrated. However, Golden Age and Warm Audio ship with their meters perfectly calibrated. Oh I also forgot to mention that writing and printing instruction manuals costs money too. More savings!

It’s nice to think manufacturing processes are 100% reliable in terms of QA and automated systems can have impressice results due to SPC a la Demming, robotics and automation, but introduce the human element and few will achieve 100% reliability.
So, I felt your point valid for the few, invalid for the many, so a disctinction between the atypical (lax qc), and the typical (good qc), seemed fairer to me.
I frankly have read about more issues with ua products(fully automated production) than Stam, few manufacturing systems are actually perfect.
If a piece of gear burns in fine for a given period but demonstrated problems after the fact, is that a build or a supply problem? It could be the failure of a specific part which is its manufacturer’s and their QC process responsibility.
Typically, I think we can take some assurance that Stam uses good quality parts but even they could fail.
We have certainly seen many example where his business practise can and should be improved but my sense is, anecdotally from comments that the typical build quality is quite high.

I’d venture a guess about the number of Warm and Golden Age units that have caught fire: zero.
I’ll post a picture of the SA2A guts. Build quality is fair but nothing to write home about. Most of the parts are good but not all. Chinese power transformer. No name VU. Acceptable solder work. Jacks are PCB mounted and not secured to the chassis, you can feel the PCB bend when you plug them in. Chassis mounted tubes give you the creeps when removing them, that arrangement is not going to last many tube changes without breaking. There’s an IC driving the VU meter (fine by me, but authentic build it is not). The chassis has vents on the sides of the cover but not on the sides of the chassis, so those vents serve no purpose. He’s just reusing a part or got shipped the wrong one.
I’ll stop here. It’s just budget gear with a few upgraded parts, at below-market prices.
Just to be fair: the unit does sound pretty good. I am going to compare it to other units eventually. We’ll see how it fares.
