Hi everybody! I'm new to this website and wanted to get a little bit more clarification on "what goes down" here vs. GS.
I see a lot more "technical" discussion going on (DIY builds, op-amp shootouts, etc.) whereas GS seems to mostly be about hyping up the stuff you've purchased for other people to get jealous of. It almost seems like one would "graduate" from GS and come here when they are ready to stop gear gossiping??
Am I completely wrong or is it true that different questions would be asked on each respective site? I'm a younger engineer that's also taken an interest in DIY, so my questions can range from basic mixing philosophy to the nerdiest of electronics questions.
If this is a similar style of community, nevermind and I'm happy to be part of it! I'm looking for clarification because I'm perceiving this forum as more "intense" and don't want to set off any "The kids found us!!!" alarms with too basic of questions.
Thanks!

Nah don't worry about it.
This is a good spot. There are good discussions to be found on GS too, but there's a much worse signal to noise ratio there. By a lot.

It’s Gearslutz if Gearslutz didn’t completely suck ass with hyperbole and shilling.

Welcome. I think you’ll find the people here pretty down to earth and much more respectful to each other. It’s a much smaller community which probably really helps in that regard.

Lots of nice knowledgeable people over at GS too. But is weighted down by some "not so nice" and/or less knowledgeable-who think they are.
Then some high level members left (like Thrill Factor), or became much less active (like Fletcher).
IMHO the peak period there was 10+ years ago. I was actually one of the first 100 members there (maybe within first 50). Now it's 100K plus.I bet John K. is right, but in my self admitted naivety, been not as aware of a lot of shilling there.
In any event, this is a great place! Chris

This place is what happens when folks get tired of the constant vying for online status that goes on over at the purple site and decide to find somewhere else to go to get away from it. We definitely get into testy back and forths on gear sometimes, but ultimately everyone ends up staying civil.

I think GS has like 300k member. Doubt all of those are legit... When a forum gets that big, there's an implicit anonymity that comes with being a single voice in a sea of voices, so it's easy to spout off nonsense as a commoner.. However, it's also a mixed bag of echo-chamber members and wannabe dragon slayers over there.. The former will agree with whomever makes them feel included and the latter wants to make their mark by dragging names through the mud. The pope and his cardinals at GS are compelled to allow this to happen to a degree to keep people coming around clicking on ads and buying from advertisers. Every ban could mean a few less $$.. It's still a small enough on this forum that there is no safety in the mass of names and there is no compelling reason to keep troublemakers around.

Oh, I get it...it would be nice to have enough members to buy me a 2019 4runner Limited, though...or a sandwich.

Welcome GS is the Wells Fargo of Audio forums, it sucks but it’s everywhere, RGO is your local Credit Union, they know you and they actually give a crap!

Lots of trolling battles on GS..and Steven Slate marketing threads. There’s still a few OG cool people but it’s tough. A guy just messaged me asking how to get the “Post Malone” vocal sound. I just can’t..

People are generally more open about their identities here, which makes for a more respectful atmosphere. At GS there are droves of trolls hiding behind screen names. And legions of shills.

I feel like I can't post on GS anymore because it's just full of people wanting to argue about everything, just because they love to argue. I don't want to have to spend 10min on each post trying to make sure it's troll-proof, and then still have to go back and argue with people who have no real purpose other than to be disagreeable. I don't have time for that and I don't get a thrill out of arguing.

Seriously, I really don’t have any problem with GS. I’m glad it’s the way it is. Otherwise I would have never started this place. I still go over there occasionally.

This has happened with every audio forum or newsgroup after it reached a certain size. I find I can avoid most of the BS by aggressively employing the ignore function. There is still stuff to be learned and it only takes a handful of people screw it up. It's the same reason popular artists need bodyguards.

How true, the problem with success in general is everybody wants it, but nobody wants what it brings. A couple of times over the years I have heard rumors about some people invitation only forums being set up but never paid them any attention. The idea of that just seams boring because by design your going to have a group of guys who pretty much think the same. Here you have a group of guys of all levels of experience who can agree or disagree without taking it personally. Where else can Bob and I disagree without starting a flame war?

A couple days ago I was alerted that a person had taken a screen shot of one of my posts on this board and made a thread about it in The Moan Zone at GS so that he could bag on me............ ......... about my spelling ( in reality it was a couple of typing errors I had not caught and edited out.)
This has to be a new low in sleaze for GS, although I actually found it fairly comical at worst.
Here's the link, if anybody wants to see....
EDIT: I appears that GS moderation has deleted the thread.
