I rolled a bunch of nos tubes in my mku47 with the thiersch blue cap and was like different eq settings. So,I go the other way and encourage people to try different tubes but deal with a pro like Bowie so you get good advice and a high quality product.

Yes, swapping tubes can really bring a certain quality to the mic, but a good tube won’t make the WA251 a Telefunken. Swapping out the tube in my BLUE Bottle Rocket Stage II mellowed out the top a bit and gave it a little mid push. I tried it with my CM49. It warmed it up a bit, but it still didn’t touch my FleA 49.

It sounds pretty good. I bet if you stuck a true high end CK12 in there, and change a few caps, you could probably compete in blind shootouts with Flea and whatnot.
While DIY is great for me, I think the Warm is a good potential mod platform for people with a little less building experience.
I'm not sure exactly, but I have done some small mods on my Peluso 2247 SE with good results.
I would be tempted just to use it as is. A capacitor upgrade would be quick and inexpensive, though.
A high end capsule swap would launch it into some other realm, talking about $300-400.
Sure, get a nice tube in there if you can manage. Some of these modern tubes however are just fine.

There are also BeezNeez, Heiserman, ADK, Shannon's caps, to look at, I wish I could try them all. Including CT12 of course.

The clip i heard, it wasted the Flea12. Badly. Now, that is just a single clip....but, i think it was posted here....while the flea 47 handliy wasted the Warm47, the c12 (to warm 251) was the opposite to my ear. Dont get me wrong, the flea sounded more like most of the c12s Ive worked with....but, the warm sounded better. Meaning it sounded more like a guy singing without “additional electronics colors”.... Ive never so much wanted to try a pair of modern inexpesnsive LDCs. Break my own rule of experience on the matter. Which includes that a lot of review demo units are intentionally cherry picked, becuase they generate sales and word of mouth. So, it would have to be somewhere with a solid return policy.

Haven't heard it it but doesn't surprise me - at all. Of course it's all subjective but the FleA 12 I tested left a lot to be desired. Then again it was many years ago & the distributor, in Kansas I recall, couldn't verify the capsule. So I'm not sure if it had Tim's capsule in it.

Approximately 10 years ago, I was tremendously impressed with the FLEA 12, when I tried it. At that time, didn't know that Tim C. had designed the capsule. Also after trying the Bock line, seems like the C12 style capsule, works better than the 251 on me. Chris

...the Flea sounds more like any C12 I've ever used, which are sibilant if anyone is close. Their 8-10khz spike can be glorious or problematic.
To be clear, my point was not to disparage the Flea12 at ALL...as much as to say the Warm, like many of their products, BOTH sounds GOOD (to my ear) and sounds very LITTLE like what they're name checking. I usually hear something in 251 clones of all price ranges that I don't like. I don't hear that at all in the Warm--it sounds more like an M269 to me, maybe with a little more "AKG midrange" cleanliness.

Yep, on that 8Hz/10KHz bump. +1 Also on getting "a good return policy".
I think the WA-251 they put at the NAMM Booth, was on the "thin" sounding end of their spectrum. The Bock version sounded like a Plus size model, compared to Twiggy!
To be fair, even Neumann put out an "anemic" U67 Reissue, at NAMM 2018. The U67 RI this year, was terrific. Chris

At least on my voice, I am finding the wa251 likes a little distance: about a foot and a little off axis about 20 degrees, nice body and tone, smooth too but little proximity effect.

I wasn’t at Namm but thin is not a way I would describe the wa251? To me, it has a natural tone with controlled body and presence and smoothness on the top ?
It doesn’t seem hyper detailed but I think that a good thing as I have had other c12 styles mikes and caps and often had sibilence problems. So far, not with the wa251.

Honestly, I think you got a "good one".
Plus I admit to be somewhat biased away from the 251... As out of the Classic vocal microphones (47/67/C37/C12/251) it works the least well, on my voice. (which I'm a little bummed about). Of course, tons of singers it sounds great on!
I'm glad it's working out well for you. Chris

It’s great to have choices and opportunity to try different mikes. Certainly a 251 doesn’t have the body of a 47, so if you were actually making comparisons to other mikes, I wouldn’t argue.
I guess we all look for that one mike that just feels right for our voices!

Very interesting. Once the audio gets MP3 compressed for YouTube, they sound extremely close on that male vocal. They sounded close otherwise to me, on everything else, but I can evaluate vocals better than other instruments.
If there are any WAV files, for shootouts like this, IMHO they give a still better idea. Thanks for posting this though! Any of these would sound great for MP3 iTunes or a YouTube channel. Chris

The Golden Age and Warm sound really good for the money there. I do like the Golden Age better than the Warm and the Tele best of all of course. The difference I noticed is the clarity and just how pretty the high end sounds on the Telefunken.

You may or may not find this comparison interesting. Just a quick listen but the Golden Age sounded more mid forward, the Telefunken more top end, and the Warm more rounded.

The Tele sounded to me like it "could" get problematic with the high end. Surprisingly, overall, I think I liked the Warm best, although the LF extension (which I would roll off on a vocal) was best on the Tele.
