Seems to be the going rate. They aren’t as easy to come by these days. I’m in the market for a great vocal mic. I’ve looked at those Stams which I discovered from this site, but positive reviews are so inconsistent. You don’t know what to believe anymore when it comes to new “clones.” Why not buy the real deal. Sa47 and wa47 are great mics at great prices, real deal is 14k. I mean that's literally why.

I never thought they sounded dark. Just natural and balanced. My favorite percussion mic. Thats just what I’ve heard. I guess the way they roll off the higher frequencies. It is not a harsh sounding mic from what I gather. Have you ever recorded bass drum with one? A lot of younger (relatively)/less experienced engineers think anything that doesn't have a "modern" hyped presence boost is "dark".
I tend to regard most things that have that boost as a bit "nasty".
But what do I know? I'm OLD.......

It's funny that this thread got bumped today. I was literally just searching google for C37's or clones earlier today. Has anyone tried the Manley Silver? I also saw that Barbaric had a C37 type mic available at one point.

I much preferred their Reference cardiod over the Silver.

I much preferred their Reference cardiod over the Silver. That blows my mind. The Silver is like warm butter. If I could trade my Gold for a Silver, I would do it in a heartbeat.

I totally agree with jcoutu1 here. The Ref Cardioid is not in the same league as the Silver. IMHO.

The Silver and the Tonelux J37 tube, both IMHO sound terrific.
Which one is "terrific-er", I would defer to those of you more learned than me.
I hope Tonelux will eventually come out with their FET version. The targeted $1500 street price, is more in my comfort range. Chris

I only heard them on headphones at a trade show, so it wasn't the best of circumstances, so I would expect you guys know them better than me and it's possible I would think the same if I had them here for a while.
There a very long shootout of around 20 mics with Warren Huart at Vintage King. I chose the Telefunken U47, the Bock 251 and the Manley Refernce in that order.

Cool interview with Joe Ciccarelli detailing the process of recreating the C37a. Sounds like they were extremely meticulous with the transformer, capsule, and circuit. I hope these mics sound really special.

A couple months ago, I did a session with Melissa Manchester for an upcoming Christmas project I produced. Tonelux let us use their 37 tube prototype for the session. It sounded real nice and the track turned out nice. It’s on my radar when it’s released

I'm interested to hear them to see how close they got. I have a pair of originals that I love. (Interestingly, in the above video Joe Chiccarelli mistakenly claims that with the creation of the c37a Sony were "trying to build a u67, trying to copy the Neumann". But the c37a precedes the u67 by at least 5 years, and probably more. Also, the entire design is drastically different from a u67.) Regardless, I have a lot of admiration for this endeavor, and great respect for Joe's work.

I believe Bob O has said before that the U67 was Neumann's response to the c37 taking wind out of U47 sales.

But seriously, their JC37 is a real nice mic. I’d love to hear it next to a Sony

I was referring to the C37a. Those tend to sell in the 3k range. I bought the Manley Silver. Got tired of waiting for the tonelux. And at that price point it makes sense to buy something new with a warranty. EveAnna makes stellar gear. Can’t imagine anyone not liking the silver. Unless, of course you don’t like darker, smooth sounding mics. Which is what I was going for.

The c800 is 9k, same principal. It's looking like c37s go for 4000, tonelux is half that. Still valid.

The Silver, and the Tonelux's are great for Crooners-male & female IMHO. Or smoothing out a harsh source. Chris

I dunno. I think they are a great all around mic to have. Stellar on just about anything. Percussion, guitar cabs, etc...
