Looks fantastic. I always like MUTE buttons on pres for same room recording, but only my Phoenix have them. It's so helpful to mute the pre for monitor speaker playback. ...Lorne You’ll notice, it has an “off” position at full counter clockwise. Right. But actually changing the gain levels multiple times during recording when monitoring back and forth between phones and speakers is problematic. I may be in a minority in liking a mute switch. But many folks on this site either have home studios or control rooms that they also track in, and to be able to flick the mic off is helpful. Of course this could be done in the DAW also, but what's the fun in that! If your reason for not having a mute switch is not to mess up the circuitry I get that -- sound over convenience every time!

The gain is stepped for repeatability. So, you crank it FAST to the left...then FAST back to where you had it. Same as a mute button!

Looks lovely Dan, now who’s paying?

How about switching in a small FET gain circuit before the transformer when in "ribbon mode". You can get ultra high impedance as well as some voltage gain, even with light loading the transformer would present.

I even experimented with an auxiliary single tube gain stage. Might need to revisit that.

maybe there's a way you can toggle a jump ch1-->ch2 and ch3-->ch4 without going through the transformers? Then maybe fit a line-in tranny on channels 1+3 so user can use it 3 ways: 4 channel tracking, 2 channel extra gain tracking, 2 channel mixing. But I do like it as is, so classy and pure and simple.

I like it. Simple and love the knobs.

I know it’s fun to talk design, but really, isn’t a Cloudlifter or Triton FetHead a perfectly practical and good sounding solution for low output mics? With one of those devices, 63 dB of gain is PLENTY, right?

I need to do some sonic tests comparing the ribbon switch feature versus a Cloudlifter at equal gain. Curious to hear the interaction.

Looks nice. Always room for tube pres :-)
I wonder should there be an on/off switch on the front. If you are not using it for a mix day but its inyour powered rack, would turning it off save on tube life?

I dream of a studio with all Dan pre's and comps. Running on tape and u47s and ribbons.
That'll show em. Just wait til my high school reunion.
