These have been on my mind as of late. I'm on Amphion One15's with a Parasound A21. Wondering what the ATC 20's would bring/improve upon? I'm coming at this from an angle of picking up a used pair of the ATC's for roughly the same cash that I could get out of my Amphion/Parasound/Amphion Cable package, so cost difference isn't really an issue. I understand that the ATC's probably need a sub, but the One15's aren't exactly thumping down there either, but I do get enough useful info to mix with.
I should just leave well enough alone sometimes, but you know...gear. Worth it? Not?

Well essentially, you’d be going from a mid forward monitor you know to a bass light monitor you don’t?
Do you think you would prefer a more linear mid speaker with perhaps a less rolled off top ?

I went from One18's with the Amp500 and their cables to the ATC 20's with Subwoofer Pros 12. My ears prefer the 20's but you're gonna want a sub.

I’d love to hear more. Was it worth the change? Big step up? Or more of a lateral move? I initially got the ATC's to go along side Barefoot MM35's I have in the main studio I work in as I was happier with the One18's I had in my home setup and I was getting better results than I was with the MM35's. However when the ATC's arrived I misjudged how big they are and they wouldn't fit next to the MM35's so I brought them home and took the One18's to the studio. Before I took them to the studio I put them next to the One18's and discovered that they indeed have more midrange detail, which is helpful for me. It took me a while to get used to this detail and it led me down some wrong paths as initial mixes didn't have as much punch or musicality as what I was doing on the One18's. However, once I did get used to them my sonics and engineering in general took a leap forward. I added the sub after I had them a year and am now very happy with the setup. With the One18's next to the MM35's I realized that they are indeed low mid forward and lacking a little top end but I still loved them though after a while the were a little redundant next to the MM35's. I've since lent them to a friend that was on some old Mackies, he sent me a mix the other day that far surpassed anything I ever heard from him before. I never thought I'd sell the One18's as they're amazing but I probably will now as I'm saving for the Dutch and Dutch 8c's to replace the MM35's. I'm curious to try them out as what I take from all the reports is they seem to be a combo of what I love about all 3 sets of monitors. Overall I'd say it was worth the change with the sub added in but I wonder if I would've done it had it been a straight swap. I did a session at my friend's place recently and was again reminded how great the One18's are. Listening on the ATC's I heard some things in my rough mix I did after tracking that I'd change but nothing was missing musically, more just those little details and opportunities that get missed after a long tracking session. A few things I will add on a user level is that the ATC 20's are big and heavy! Much more so than the Amphions but I think this is a benefit, everything feels solid as a rock and I've never pushed them anywhere near what they can give. I've only heard the One18's and Two18's so I don't know how the One15's low end is but I would definitely recommend thinking about a sub to go with the ATC's. I don't know if any of this is helpful but I guess if I were you I'd ask myself if I want more detail in the mids and clearer highs, do I want to hear everything laid bare, or do I prefer things more cohesive with less detail.

Very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to share. Sounds like if I’m going to go that route, I’d better plan on a sub. Not sure if I wanna deal with integrating a sub. It’s always sounded like a headache. Those 8C’s though. Man, wish I had an extra $13k laying around.

It’s always sounded like a headache. Those 8C’s though. Man, wish I had an extra $13k laying around. Yeah, the setup of the sub was a little annoying. That said Brad Lunde led me on the right path with his Subwoofer Pro's 12. I run it in parallel via a Coleman switcher and everything plays nice together. I'm glad I went through the extra effort as the whole system is so pleasing to work and even just listen on. My favorite thing about the Barefoots is everything is integrated, thus why the 8c's seem interesting to me, reported ATC clarity in a full range that also help out in non optimal rooms while still cheaper than ATC50's. I hope that's all true, trying to get a demo has been a process since January and I've passed up some good deals while saving the pennies. If not then I'll probably go the ATC20 and Sub12 route again and try my luck at integration in that room.

I for myself tried both the ATCs, and Amphions at my studio. I ended up with a pair of Spiral Groove, that I found used for 2k CAD$, and that sounded better than both other offerings. They are smaller than both of those, and don't have the lowmid bump I noticed too on the Amphions, and despite their crazy small size, I go down to 40 Hz flat on the entire spectrum. Slightly less detail in the mids than ATC, but not something that I miss in my end result. My mixes have never been better. By looking at them, one could think Amphion borrowed to their design. Simply put, they are the best tool I have, and since there is no hype at all around them, you can find them very cheap.

They used to be hyped right before Amphion exploded. $2k is a good price. I had them side by side with a pair of Amphion One18's and One15's. The SG's are very good. Bright. I think their strength is transient response. Here is my review I wrote comparing the One15's, One18's and the Spiral Grooves. Congrats on the beautiful monitors! www.gearslutz.com/board/showpost.php?p=10538868&postcount=82

So, any new thoughts between the 15's & 18's or is your room "interfering" with a decision?
By any chance, have you worked with any of the ATC's or the Genelec 8351's? And, might be off topic but, why are you selling a brand new Symphony II (w/ 16x16)?

I think I initially kept the One18's after that review, and then switched over to the One15's a few months later. The One15's were perfect in that room. I'm in a new room now, bigger. Still on the One15's. I just got the "shiny new toy" itch to try something new. But, I should really just stick with what I have for the time being. I still find the One15's to be great. I used to have the ATC SCM25's in that old room. They were unreal. Felt like the music was being played live right in front of me. I ultimately sold them for smaller monitors to better fit my room. Selling the Symphony because I'm incorporating a summing mixer in my setup, and need more i/o channels. The Symphony earns it's reputation. Really top shelf conversion.

Have you ruled out the focal shape twins ? Those look intriguing as well. Some body has the speaker itch😎 Seriously though it would be interesting if ATC were to make a small near/ mid field with the SL mid, 25’s are cool but every time I hear them I want that mid with the motor bigger than most woofers.

I thought the same. Something like a proper baby 50 with the new tweeter would be amazing.

Yeah, I think I've talked myself down. But I still can't shake those ATC 20's. My gut tells me to check them out. BUT, my brain tells me to renovate my room first, which seems like a monumental and insurmountable task compared with just swapping speakers. However, I've been around long enough to know that I could swap speakers all day long, but I'll never fully appreciate each without my room being properly dialed in.

No, I ended up moving the ATC 20's (with sub) to the studio when the Barefoot MM35's went in for repairs with a DSP issue. Having them in place of the MM35's made me fall in love with them all over again, I'm reminded of this as the MM35's now at the home studio makes me wish I had a second pair of 20's. The DSP issue took 3 times back and forth to get them working again, this happened as people in the 8c thread at that other site were having DSP issues so I was put off by that. When I heard the 8c's at VKLA they were definitely impressive but for the time being I'm staying where I'm at, it's possible I could be missing out but I love the 20's and know they're bulletproof.

I slept on it, logged in to buy and they had sold. Been bumming all day. But I keep reading opinions that the 20’s are “slightly” better with midrange detail than the One15’s. Slightly isn’t encouraging. Of course, others will say “night and day”. Meh. The truth is probably in between.

When I got mine a few years back they were demo's and it was before the price increase, still was a stretch at the time but glad I did it. I slept on a pair on Reverb at the end of the year, not as good of a deal as yours but I also kick myself. I'm picking my One18's back up from my friend, it'll be interesting to compare them to the ATC's again.
