Really? When was the card released? How long after the card being released was it included for free? Is the original Apollo still available? In the lifespan of the orignal when was the card included for free?

The original tbolt 1 card was available near the end of the first year. It was eventually replaced by the tbolt 2 card, now there is a tbolt 3 card: all are backwards compatible. I think UA advertised the card (tbolt2), included with new sales at least in one promotion, roughly in the year before the BF got released, so I guess around 2014. Yes, the original SF is still available, I believe it is called the firewire apollo and does not include a tbolt card. www.uaudio.com/audio-interfaces/apollo.html

Ive been wrong many times before, but if memory serves the card was bundled much sooner than that timeline after if was released.

I don't think so, maybe Dhru can confirm, but the bundled tbolt card was only part of an Apollo promo ? the harbinger of the bf being released ?
The tbolt 1 card was available for purchase near the end of the first year (?) of apollo, but not bundled for free.

Original Apollo was released in Jan 2012 and the TB card was released in Sept 2012.

This sale isn't as good as when they throw in a free satellite, so I'm not reading this as foreshadowing.

Yeah, The free satellite was the best deal they offered. On a side note, in the past 10 months a since I switched from Antelope to Apollo Mkii, my mixes and productions have taken a definite step up sonically. For whatever folks think of the Apollo mkii converters, sonically the results have been much more pleasing here. The Antelope stuff was clear sounding but the high frequencies added up to harshness. With the Apollo rig I haven’t battled that issue. Stuff is sounding more pleasant and balanced. I still use Hilo as my DA and. Burl as my money DA, but the Apollo’s are used for all my multitrack sessions and for interfacing a bunch of Outboard. Been really diggin it here. With the Antelope and previously the original SSL Alphalink, I couldn’t get rid of the zingy high frequencies, even with EQ. That zingy Sound was always present to some extent

My harbinger comment was about the past impending release of the BF.
If we follow this : Original Apollo in 2012, MKII in 2015 FYI.
And that Gannon was moved to Prod Dev, roughly a year ago: my money is on the Apollo mkiii dropping , with significant upgrades in 2018.

"Between July 2014 and April 2015, all Apollo and Apollo 16 units shipped from the factory with the Thunderbolt 2 Option Card pre-installed."

If they don't upgrade the converters to a level equal to a Symphony, they won't sell as many. People will just keep their MkII's.

The current apollo internal processing architecture can't support more than 4 sharc chips due to the FPGA bottle neck. So, I expect the mkiii will have been fundamentally redesigned to at least double internal processing capacity.
This would pave the way for UA to double internal plug processing capacity, nice and have the equivalent to an Octo on-board.
Remember, currently even the 8p with 8 pres, can only support 8 73 instances and then it is tapped out for tracking processing.
The current symphony mkii actually represent a drawing board design age from like 5 years ago or so ?
So, UA needs to really step up its apollo game to truly have an innovative market leader. UA likes to upgrade the OS significantly with new interfaces, so fingers crossed that Console is also tweaked significantly and how chips align with channels for tracking processing ?

I would not be surprised to see a new Apollo “PRO” introduced but keeping the MkIi still available. They are still fine for many people at different levels and would provide an in-brand upgrade path without devaluing the mkIi

What do you think a "PRO" model would have as upgrades?

From a GS Newsletter received today: ![UAD-X Image](http://czegel.com/UAD-X.jpg) I'm guessing something is coming soon, I must be psychic. Or is that psychotic? Maybe a HW control surface to operate like the Console UI? With 16 channel strips that can be mapped to the API, Neve and SSL strip plugins and control the EQ with real world rotary knobs a la Softube Console 1 only with the form factor of a console. Plus 8 group channels that can be set assigned to your ITB group channels. In tracking mode the preamp section controls Unison pre's Channel count limited only by the number of Apollos you have. That would certainly sell some Apollos and plugins and do something native plugs can't do. I can dream :-)
