Just pick up a Monoprice 5 watt amp. Good build and sounds pretty good for less than $80.00. However I like to mod everything. Comparing it to a Fender Champ circuit I made a few changes. Changed some values of resistors, Removed some Caps and resistors, upgraded some caps to orange drops, replaced the speaker and wire with a Wherehouse 8" and put in an 1960 Mullard 12AX7 tube. The amp is louder, puncher. Fender clean, Chimes like vox and grinds like a marshall. Not a one trick pony. I've got about $140. into it. $80.00 for the amp and $60. for the speaker with shipping and some time while watching T.V. Haven't compared it to other fender champs but I don't think they could sound better.

One mod i've done is install a speaker jack on the speaker of a really small combo amp, so that i can either connect the little head to the "cab" or run the head to a larger cab. makes for a REAL light head. I did this with an Orange crush 10watt. That amp with a good speaker cab (late 80's Marshall jubilee 2x10 square), it is REALLY convenient for gigs I don't want to lug the jcm800 around to.

The monoprice amps have a built in speaker jack. Eric, years ago I was going to build a tube DI box. There was an antique store a group of us guys hung out at. I told them I was looking for 12AX7s. A radio guy came back with about 20 tubes, R.C.A., Millard. Westinghouse, Etc. I paid $2 - $3 apiece.
