A U89? Are you sure about that? Had one and it was underwhelming for vocal duties. A vintage U87 is far better on vocals, and can kill with a simple sdc on guitar, and with a 57 on electrics, and on acoustic piano. I'd rather have that than a U89 unless you are doing something unusual. A high quality microphone will have the greatest effect on your final sound of anything in your chain. Buy the best mic you can and don't worry about the channel strip. A lot of the preamps in interfaces today will suffice along with eq, and compressor plug ins. After the instrument it's all about the mic. Are you yotonic sure about this? I have 2 vintage U87s, 1 U87ai and THREE U89s. The U89s are better on soprano and tenor vocals, whilst the U87s are better on alto and baritone vocals. The U89 slays on horns and tom-toms. Its also fantastic on non-guitar stringed instruments. It is all subjective and application.

Some time ago I had a Trident S40 channel strip made and marketed by John Oram. It was very well made, felt and sounded quite good. I ended up having to sell it before I could use it to it's full potential.

Had to sell it because I owned too many pres, but I kinda miss it.

So, I’m clearly a big nerd. I went on Reverb and priced a theoretical 500 series rig purely as a value for money thought experiment: Portico 511 pre @ $ 435 Kush Electra @ $410 JLM Opto @ $646 Heritage 4 slot @ $250 That’s $1730 w/ shipping but not tax. Caveat: have only used the Kush in the list above. I can't think of a good reason NOT to go with a 500 rig. There's just no such thing as the perfect channel strip. You might love the pre-amp and EQ, but the comp grabs wrong, or everything's great except the pre-amp isn't the perfect match for your mic. Best of all, if a component doesn't do what you thought it would - swap it out. In just about all cases, when compared to a similar selection of 19" gear, once you've got three or four slots filled the box is effectively paid for and then some. Then there's just the option of variety; I'm actually getting to the point where the song/genre suggests which pre-amp I want to use for my vocal (with the same mic).

That reminds me i have a Trident 4T channel strip tucked away in a box somewhere. It was very versatile for the price. I loved using it live as well as in the studio for its dual function. 2nd hand prices place it Under $650 for a pre/eq/comp in 19" great little unit.

Well it all got cut short anyway, run out of power sockets.. Anyway, I'm spending way too much time trying to find stuff that's a nicety so I might just actually do some music for a change .. I'll look into this again when I'm building my new dedicated studio.

What channel strip did you end up with? the vintech stuff is peaking my interest again. i have had a lot of Neve clone stuff but never owned a real 1073. had a few vintage neve 3314 units though. but the Vintech X73 and the X73i i am reading up on at the moment. would be interested to see what you ended up going with. cheers

Nearly there though.. 2) Shelfooooorrddss.. Like M&M's apparently, you can't have enough. 3) Never heard anything Vintech but they look cool. 4) AMS Neve maybe? I don't think the 500 series are all that expensive comparatively. Vintage 3314's aye, ohh swanky.! Any clips?
