Ok, so my main monitor speakers have developed hum and hiss without a source plugged in.
I submitted to KRK for warranty repair and was approved and given a RMA. But... and the big but is that I have to ship both 10-3's to CA for the repair. Probably going to be $100 or more to ship across country.
Or... Do I void the warranty and crack them open to perform a repair myself. Probably less then $20 in PSU caps. The issue that I can see is I would be going blind without schematics.
What would you do?

Ship them to the factory, else you'll void your warranty. Why do they want you to ship both? Are both humminmg? Do they do it with no input cables pluggerd in? Make certain that the problem is really in the speakers before shipping. It seems somewhat odd to me that both speakers would develop bad caps at exactly the same time... The power supplies are almost certainly switching supplies, so troubleshooting them might be a bit harder than expected.

They both have the issue... One is louder then the other. They developed the issues about 6 months apart.
I have done all the appropriate tests to determine that it is internal to the speakers.

Get it done under warranty. Since both went bad over a period of time there may be a build issue that the factory may have since dealt with.

Send them in, it could be a simple cap but it could be something else they know of!

Thanks guys...
It made me ask the question about a local warranty repair center. Apparently there is a center 1.5hrs from me. If I drive it it's not to bad, and if I ship it it's gotta be cheaper then to CA!
I will probably ship it there, then pick up after the repair.
They only told me about CA because they offer free return shipping.

I'd crack em open. No sense in paying 15% of what they're going for on Ebay new these days just to ship them across country. You're right, caps are likely the culprit. If you can do the local thing, take them in though.

KRK’s current owners have been know to make some stupid choices to hit a price, but very good at correcting it under warrenty but that’s the DJ world!
