And we're talking subtle here...I wouldn't be upset to use the 6BJ6's. I do think it sounds better, but it sounded damn good to begin with.

To my ears, it seems a little more full bandwidth and a little less wolfy. But I haven't really AB'd the hell out of it. Also, like I said, the compression seems more transparent. Maybe matt can chime in when he gets his... I'll do it.

My new 6386 is warming up for a session in about an hour. I have removed the two tubes marked "5749 (6BJ6)", as others have done. My initial impression is that the 6386 is superior - it delivers a slightly "better" tonality IMHO. I hesitate to call out frequencies - "fatter/smoother/brighter/mid-forward", etc, because it is hard to quantify. It just sounds better. One thing is for sure - and maybe one or both of the 6BJ6s has a problem - but the 6386 makes significantly less noise with it in the circuit, and the 6BJ6s out. No question, the 6386 makes the STA even more superior. I can't imagine tracking anything without it.
I LOVE MY STA!!!!

I've had 3 bad 6BJ6's in the past...makes me wonder what's up with them...
I agree, though, Matt. It definitely sounds better with the 6386. The compression is more transparent and I think the tonality of the Sta is better.

I just heard a Drip 670 that a friend built that has the JJ 6386 tubes. It sounded un real. One of the coolest compressors I have heard. Better then the vintage 670 I have heard. So, I would feel ok using the 6386 from JJ.

With the 6386-enabled STA inline, the takes are "bigger" for lack of a way to adequately describe it. A gorgeous, timeless comp at work, I guess. And I've got it set single/fast, just kissing the GR. It's a beautiful thing, my vocalist will be stoked to hear the result.
