So if a Studio already has the somewhat "bright-ish" U87ai... Then the Max Mod is a an even more useful complement. I realize I may be stating the obvious. Chris Yes.

The Max mod stock rolls off a touch more on top and adds a small bump in the low mids when compared to a stock U67 And that is entirely the transformer provided with it. It sounds like the Neumann with the Neumann transformer in it.

Does anyone here have a recommendation of someone honest and reliable that can offer this service? And any idea of cost?

It sounds like he may be going in that direction as an option. If so I'll grab one like that. If not, I have Neumann's BV12 here.

So if a Studio already has the somewhat "bright-ish" U87ai... Then the Max Mod is a an even more useful complement. I realize I may be stating the obvious. Chris Here are some samples for you to mull over. First set were all done at my place at separate times, but through the same chain; microphone into my stock Apollo preamps with no unison emulations. It is also interesting to note that each of these is using the same capsule from my U87ai. When I sold my first MK67 a while back I picked up the TLM67 circuit to play around with. MK67 has a Telefunken EF86 Silver in it.
This next set is my MK67 next to a real, well maintained, stock U67 and an M269C at The Barber Shop Studios. This was done simultaneously with the microphones as close as possible to each other. It was recorded directly into the SSL Console with no EQ or compression. I was about 2ft back.
Now my voice is fairly warm so the muddiness of the MK67 is more apparent than on other voices, but this should give some context.
**EDIT: I added the RMS269 and the BLUE Bottle Rocket Stage II with their B11 (U67ish) cap, both recorded at my place. B11 was recorded through my Neve preamp though. I really wish I hadn't have had to get rid of the RMS269. That B11 I used on all the vocals of an EP I did for the new musical "Voyages." It might be muy favorite of the BLUE Caps.

My favorites, in order were... Vintage M269C, B11, MK67 (I'll sacrifice a little detail for warmer tone-vs. the others). I also prefer the TLM 67, over the U87ai on this song. Thanks again, Chris

Yeah, that M269C was something special. In that shoot out the M49C was a clear winner for me over the U67. The U67 and M269C seemed tied for 2nd place, although the M269C vs M49C in the busier mixes was more about preference than "being better." The M49 is more colored and beefier. The M269C didn't seem to need any EQ when placed in the mix. I sold my original MK67 kit to fund picking up the RMS269 after that shoot out. I found the RMS269 a touch brighter. I often wonder what the RMS269 would sound like with a real Neumann Capsule or Heiserman's slightly more vintage take on the K67 instead of ADK's. The RMS is also a sound alike, not a part for part clone. I spoke briefly with Chad at Signal Art Electronics about a 67 or 269 clone as well.
That B11 has really been a go to of mine in the studio when the FleA 49 gets a little too "in your face." I find it works better on more sources than the TLM67 which can be a little boxy on certain voices. It worked excellently for that musical theater EP I recorded. All the vocals were Warm and Natural, albeit needing a little boost in the top end.
I have a love/hate relationship with the U87ai. When it's right, it's right. I much prefer it through a tube preamp than a clean one like the Apollo here. My first album we used the U87ai through a Summit MPC100 tube preamp, and sometimes in conjunction with a BLUE Woodpecker Ribbon for some additional warmth. It doesn't hurt that we recorded in a beautiful, professionally designed hall either. I like it with my Demeter VTMP on most voices and through my Tab Funkenwerk V78M on my voice. I really like it on guitars & cello. Part of my desire for the MK67 kit with the Neumann transformer is to give me an excuse to keep it around.

From Max:
Hey everyone,
Sry for the delay - I was planning on announcing the new feature together with the release of the new batch. Unfortunately the shipment of the parts was delayed again, looks like end of Oktober/early November now. Thanks for your patience. A little thank you for the long wait: This coming batch will be equiped with sweet sounding NOS Valvo tubes at no extra cost. As you probably know, the original was shipped with Valvo tubes as well. Pricing will be 949€ + shipping and fees as described in the first post.
Regarding the reissue mode:
Over the last couple of months I had time to listen & test a reissue and another old, slightly brighter original vintage U67 here in my workshop. They sound relatively close to each other, a little brighter and a little less low mids, a little more modern.
I already knew from implementing the linear mode that the circuit with it's complex feedback network allows for alteration of the frequency response (without having to change the transformer), so I created a "profile" to match the reissue's response, again switchable via the low cut knob on the mic head.
So you'll have both, my original vintage and the more modern reissue character in one mic.
Existing users can modify their mod by simply adding one capacitor to the circuit. A 10nF 400V radial Film Cap (like the yellow ones used throughout the PCB, # MKT1813310404) goes between the grey cable and pin1. The cap can be soldered directly to pin1, place it between the rail and and the next yellow cap - a snug fit. If needed, I can take a picture of the assembly, let me know.
-Max

I wonder how hard it would be to make a max mod kit for the Warm WA87. My dream is to have a handful of 67's for OH, GTR. etc. I could maybe have a real one one day but a bunch of real ones would be tough. Not enough money floating around down here in Alabama.

Great idea. Don't laugh but MXL makes an effectively "under the radar" U87 clone, named the MXL V87. $200 new, around $120 used. It's a nice sounding vocal mic, kinda U87-ish (I think the WA-87 is somewhat closer). So it would make a nice U67-ish mic too-I think. Chris P.S. I gave mine away, as a gift to a friend... For him to do VO/narration on.

Just an FYI, Max just advised that the new batch is ready. The new batch all come standard with Max’ “Vintage Mode” and he has replaced his “linear mode” with a new “Reissue mode.” See the details in my above post regarding the “Reissue Mode.”
