Have you demoed Kush and what about that Russian guy who does sta? I remember they had something I think called Grntleman’s eq, which was multiple eq’s in one plug, the British was very colourful ! kush is very interesting. i may jump on board because of the adesigns stuff. i need to demo it first though.

Do you use UAD stuff? I love what the Curve Bender does. You can crank stuff on it and it never sounds wrong. i'm not into uad because i don't believe i should need to buy hardware to use a plug. plus, i gotta say i am constantly underwhelmed with UAD when i hear it.

I really love the Sie-Q for a little something. And the Maag is always magic dust. i like the maag idea. not heard it. i just keep thinking the slickeq can get me in the same ballpark. but that is a little uninformed as i've not heard the maag. the 2 band version was on sale recently and i nearly did it.

Fabfilter. Waves Veq4 has been getting some use lately. I use a lot of outboard eq though.

Maybe check out the Waves H-EQ. It has enough bands, and curves to sort of be as good as a digital EQ. But you get to pick "UK Vintage" "US Modern" on and on, whatever, for each band that you are using...pretty cool. It has the digital EQ functionality as well with dragging points on a curve, which is how I tend to prefer to EQ with a mouse.
The Waves Puigtec is also cool. Used to be my go-to pultec. And VEQ and API from Waves as others have mentioned.
The Softube stuff is really good, too, in general, even though I haven't used them in a while.
A sleeper is the Passive EQ from Native Instruments. It's a Manley sort of thing....parallel EQ functionality. Hard to make it sound wrong. Only used it once or twice, but it was nice.
To be honest, though, most of my EQ is stock Cubase, Pro Q2, or the UAD SSL and Neve. I'm starting to use my hardware, too, more hybrid.
I find that functionality is the dominating factor with EQ for me. I get my "tone" elsewhere if it's needed. I almost want to say that vintage-style EQ is outdated, but I won't, because I do like it in the hardware realm. Where it makes more sense to me, and has more tone.
If I had to pick one "virtual hardware" EQ it would probably be the Pultec without question. It just does a thing. Followed by SSL and Neve. Those curves do a lot of good.

thanks monkey
I guess I'm looking for something that's more than the usual suspects. I've tried them and don't seem to gel with them. waves puig as an example gets rave reviews online but was a bit of a disappointment for me. same with waves api eq. the 560 is pretty good on kick and snare but that's where the romance ends. I am finding that most of the plugin eq's i'm using in general just don't sound analogue. the waves veq4 to me makes stuff sound smaller.
I'm mixing an album now and will persist with the usual suspects but next album i'll try the acustica and boz stuff.

Maybe save up for a real analogue EQ if you want real analogue sound? I know none of the plugs I use (all the TDR stuff and EQuilibrium) sound anything like my two hardware EQs (Thermionic Culture Pullet and Dangerous Music Bax EQ). They complement each other well, but most of the vibe is coming from that Pullet.

if hardware is out of reach and you demo acustica gear try the Diamond Colour eq - there's a good youtube demo of it.

If they still don't "sound analog" then the EQs you're using are probably not the problem.

I can only use hardware EQ's here. Digital stuff is edgy to me and any boost is an instant issue.
The analog EQ's are also set up pretty well. I use exotic high voltage polystyrene film caps for anything above 2k hz, it does make a huge difference. Even WIMA polyprop's have their sonic issues like stridency.
The exotic silver foil types are even better but cost a fortune to buy. Most have never heard the really good stuff. Mylar box caps seem to be good enough for the masses.

I think this is generally true, but I don't think the boost issue is true of the MKII UAD plugins I've tried or DMG with Pultec or in Parallel with Sontec curves, or Sie-Q. The UAD 1073 MK II for instance at 3.2k sounded much less edgy to me than Slate's and very similar in phase to my BAE 1073Ds. This post is interesting regarding their SSL emulation, which I personally feel is very close to the hardware, much more than any other I've tried. www.gearslutz.com/board/showpost.php?p=12509577&postcount=140

EQ is where I think Acustica has he decided advantage. I have the Pearl II plug they did on a limited run and the 5khz shelf is just unbelievably transparent. Like much better than anything else I’ve got. Hardware included (although I don’t have any hw that shelf’s that low). Also, I use Gold EQ on drumbus as the top end on that is killer too. Find myself reaching for Pro-EQ2 all the time for surgical and the Massenberg EQs on UAD. Also the Harrison is really good too.

You mentioned you liked the idea of the Kush Hammer. I use that plugin a ton and I really dig it. Like the hardware, though, it’s all broad brushstrokes using that thing. I’d call it tone shaping rather than EQ. Kush has a sister company called Sly Fi. They have an EQ (called “Axis”) that Greg from Kush conceptualized to be a 550 a or b EQ with a variable amount of saturation and to not be limited by the frequency or boost/cut detents that the API stuff makes you adhere to. Maybe that’s the thing you’re looking for? slyfidigital.com

Just to bring up one that hasn't been mentioned, waves rs56 is great. I prefer it to the soundtoys sie q. Very sweet sounding eq. Gentle, broad curves with fixed eq points. Based on a passive circuit. Does ms. Me likey Edit Sean beat me to it. I think the waves rs56 is outstanding. That and the sie-q are my go to color plugs. It's amazing how many times I choose the rs56 in the box. as far as outboard I have Kush Electra Warm Pultec Square State Solid State B-0ne Alta Moda AM25 DBX 905 (modded by Revive) And yet that RS56 still shows up in mixes.
