Well...I guess I won’t be buying any more UA products. I have been a UA customer for over a decade. From the UAD-1 on. I’ve bought cards, changed systems, sold them, bought Apollos, sold them, bought them back. Bought Satellites, sold them...bought more than I needed and decided to sell some, etc. As you guys know, I recently sold an Apollo 8. The guy is in Central America and wasn’t getting it for a month, but I assured him there would be no problem with the transfer. After all - I’ve done it before, right. I get an email today saying that the transfer I submitted in November hadn’t gone through. So I called UA and they tell me I have passed the limit for their “transfer policy.” They limit doing license transfers to 5 times (though mine had been over five - i guess i should be sending them a Christmas gift for buying dozens of their products) He told me since I wasn’t transferring any plugs, he’d “allow” this transfer to go through if the other party called in and they’d do it manually. So, I guess this means I should never buy another UA product since I’ll never be able to transfer ownership again. So, keep that in mind as you buy UA from now on. I guess I’m stuck with my plugs and satellite forever now. Total bullshit.

Can't you just change your account login and give it to the new person so they can login themselves to the account? update the address on file, etc... What actually gets changed when you change ownership?

If you had bought it with bitcoin you would be all set. You could trade it for a flying car.

Yeah you could give your account credentials to a buyer, people do that commonly I think. BUT, I'm 100% with you. That's some bullshit. A limit? Like, a lifetime limit? What is this, healthcare? That's totally ridiculous.

You can change your credentials? Haven't even looked into it...All will be fine for this transaction if they do what they say and transfer it...What I'm concerned about, though is that I'm screwed if I ever wanted to sell my satellite and plugs. I now can't transfer my license to anyone? I'm waiting for this transfer to process and then I'm going to raise holy hell about it on the internet.

That blows. I can't it surprises me. Software companies are horrible about transfers. UA is now officially a software company. The transformation is now complete.

help.uaudio.com/hc/en-us/articles/206238366I read through this and there is no reference to any time limitation? I would contact them again as I personally found ua cs very inconsistent. I have never heard of anything like this before ? Why not pm Matt Hepworth at UA forum and ask him to check: he’s pretty connected at UA.

This is the BS why I sold everything by Waves and UAD. Guess what... it made me happy.

I mean, I've bought and sold like 15 UA items...but I don't know why they give a shit...I buy their marked up stuff new and sell at a loss. And now they're saying they don't want me doing that. So I'll just spend my money elsewhere. I don't think they knew I had a forum that gets millions of impressions per year

WTF? If this is true, then I'm out. I've been buying UAD for over a decade. Imagine this scenario: you bought UAD-1 and sold to buy UAD-2 pcie duo card. Sold that to buy a UAD2 pcie quad everything bundle. That's 1 transfer. Sold that to buy UAD FireWire satellite. That's 2 transfers. Sold the fw satellite to buy an Apollo MKI. That's 3 transfers. Bought quad thunderbolt satellite. Sold Apollo MKI to buy MKII. That's 4. Sold quad thunderbolt to buy Octo. That's 5. See what I'm getting at? The technology/processing power changes so much that to cap number of transfers is prohibitive.
I have spent a ton of money with UAD, but will not spend another dollar if I am unable to resell.

Interesting. I'm not anywhere near exhausting the 5 transfer limit but that is some bullshit. That sounds like something Avid would pull. I can't imagine why it matters.

You can transfer from here to eternity with AVID. All they care about is trying to sell you again. That sucks John. I can't imagine they can keep that policy up for long. One thing is sure, I truly appreciate companies that cater to customer service. UA? Not so much.

I just sold 2 octo PCI-E cards and an Apollo 8p and have been trying to get the transferred since the end of November. Finally last Friday, and then today the 2 octo PCI-E cards transferred (manually after several requests sent), but the Apollo is still in my account and the buyer (through ebay) is really not understanding that they need to contact UA to have them transfer it to their account. Since they aren't getting back to me, and apparently haven't contacted UA yet, I guess their Apollo will sit in my account and be unusable. The thing is, I think it's a gift from someone;s wife, and she just doesn't understand it all. I hope UA does the right thing before Xmas or some poor guy is going to be bummed as heck with an expensive paperweight under the tree.
I know UA have never been particularly pleasant about transferring plugins, but NONE of my three transfers included any plugins. Hardware should be transferred within 3 days without any questions asked, as many times as we would like.
I also picked up an Apollo 16, and am surprised (puzzled) at some of the internal design decisions they made.

They should at least make it known that this is their policy.

Something else UA needs to keep in mind is that, if this is going to be their policy going forward, they're going to need a much easier and quicker way for people to verify whether an Apollo or Satellite they're interested in purchasing on the used market has any transfer "credits" left tied to the most recent owner.
I know I would certainly be gun-shy about buying any UAD product on the used market without some sort of pre-verification that I wasn't buying a brick. It's unfortunate but also a truth that there are people out there who might try to go ahead and sell an Apollo anyway to someone who isn't aware the current owner has knowingly reached their transfer limit.
Without an easy way for people to verify the status of used UAD gear, it could depress sales of used UAD gear as knowledge of this transfer policy becomes more well known, which could in turn depress sales of new UAD gear. People are generally less inclined to buy something if/when they know they may not be able to sell it down the road if they no longer want or need it.
This is not good news at all. I'm really surprised that UA would ever consider such a thing. Even if it's not a deliberately shitty move, it certainly at least seems to be short sighted and a bad business decision.

How do they figure the sale of a piece of hardware is a "transfer" that they need to approve?

How do they figure the sale of a piece of hardware is a "transfer" that they need to approve? Because any UAD software anyone is using is tied to a piece of hardware. Any hardware has to be in someone's account authorizing the use of some software. It's so clunky. They need to streamline their operation. I really miss a few of their plugs, truly top shelf stuff. But the hassle is burdensome.

This is really bah humbug. I'm sorta odd man out, not buying many plugs (4-5 maybe?), and this sort of thing makes me feel justified in that position.

Is the software market drying up a bit? I've been buying for about 3 years and the deals we got recently are far better than anything I've ever seen. Seemed like Waves has been selling almost everything for $29. But I stopped using most everything by them except CLAEffects, CLAGuitars, and H-Delay. They may have to ditch their WUP policy at this rate. We've seen Dave Hill finally allow someone to sell his stuff at a reasonable rate. Duende plugins were going for $39 and $15. Antares sold Avox and Duo at huge discounts. Quinto took his sknote products up a notch in quality and added AAX-DSP to them while still charging under $40 for everything except Disto-S, which seems to be on par with the offerings by Slate and UAD. Plugin Alliance had bigger sales than before. Black Rooster supposedly makes some top notch stuff and sells it real cheap. There's been other unprecedented discounts too. And this is with a lot of this stuff not showing up on crack sites. UAD is expendable at this point. If they were native and sold between $50-$100, I might be interested in some of it. But no way would I consider buying it now with a no transfer policy. It's already silly that I would be required to buy some DSP interface with minimal power when I can get a Threadripper 1950x for $699.

I can see why UAD is doing it. They want to protect plug in resales because they make zero cash with any resale. What they don't see they make current paying customers very unhappy because most buyers want the hardware with the plug-ins.
I am sure there is a big ditch in the audio plug in market. Too many good plug in makers are in the market.
I was counting on an UAD monthly everything bundle plan like with slate. But nothing like it happened and most of my native plug-in s can compete with UAD. Second thing was that I can't transport the pcie card to a different place, but I can with the I loks. Third thing they have a bad customer service, high nose. Another reason to leave UAD was rediculess high prices in the last year's.200 and more dollars for a single plug in. That made me starting to buy more real gear aka hardware.
Tottaly different experience with Slate-Digital. Great service. Great offers. And great sounding tools too. In the end Slate won the race because his rental plan beats everything. It's a no brainier costs vs performance.
To say something positive about UAD at least the plug in transfer worked flawless when I sold my PCIE card. Within 24 hours the buyer had the plugs in his fresh UAD account.
The plan for 2018 is more real gear anyway. I can't carry it around too but it's a marketing factor customers are still impressed seeing the lights and meters jump...and it's no simulation thing...it's the real deal.
I am running a business now for 20+ years and I know how important it's is to make current customers happy. If you loose them they are lost forever.
Happy Christmas to all.

Here's what I don't get. It's easy enough to just send someone the installers for the latest UAD drivers via dropbox or whatever. They install it on their system, plug in the hardware, and boom, they have UAD stuff working on their computer. Sure, they can't buy new plugins, but they can use whatever is currently authorized with the hardware. If you're selling everything, then they're fine. It seems to me that the problems arise when you want keep your plugins and sell only your hardware. Am i missing anything here?
