I agree smallbutfine, but it's the same mic. He probably recorded it a little differently or it might have been one of the tracks he did at my place with a better preamp.
Back on topic, the Mic Clone was supposedly developed with the Guage ECM-87, so it doesn't surprise me it sounds good with the M49 setting. The Avantone CV95 really liked the M49 preset too.

So - surely this thing is worth $499/$699...I might pick one up.

I used it most when multiple writers came in and would round robin on the mic, also good for traveling. I keep it around as it performed well on some things in the past but it's never first call for anything we record, mostly sits unused. I did consider getting a second at that price as a stereo pair of mics is always handy to have around.

That sounds like a great idea. I really respect Slate, for all the innovations. But so far-at least on vocals-I prefer the "hardware". Chris

Vincent R. had a Slate VMS. He threw some blind listening tests at me and with 4 or 5 microphones in the mix, to my ears the Slate came in dead last every time except one, and in that test it came in second to last. I get why it would be appealing to some folks but if I owned it, the only time I'd reach for it was if all my other mics were broken.

I tried it when it came out. To me, the sonics just weren’t there. I preferred my ~$300 3U stuff to it by a good margin.

There was something about the transient that was just better on his 3U mics. I remember this on acoustic guitar especially. The VMS just accentuated the attack in a very particular way vs. the 3U mics, which controlled them better to my ears.

I'd be curious to hear Shannon's own assessment of before vs. after his mod...

I would consider it if I was doing lots of singers. Also, I wonder how it would function using it on stacked oooh type backing vocals, selecting different types. cheers Wiz

But I know me...I’d probably never take the time to try out different types on a singer. Hell, it’s been really rare that Shanupton hasn’t been freaking killer on everything. Occasionally it will be sibilant on a singer. But the more I use this thing the more I’m in awe of it.

I don’t think the VMS would really do much for you.

That was my impression between it and the Advanced Audio stuff I had at the time. Give me a couple of weeks. I’ll post my shoot out between the CM48T, CM48, U87ai, Slate FG47, and the FleA 47. The slate is not even close. That said, $499 should probably be it’s regular price.

Does anyone in here have the VMS currently with Classis Tubes 3? I’m planning to finish up my shoot out video and I’d love if someone could apply some of the newer emulations to a couple of raw tracks I recorded with the ML1 and send me stems with the FG47 MKII & FG49 emulation. If so, PM me.

My friend Matt who owns 2 VMS system's for his studio/recording school and is a big fan of the system is helping me out with my shoot out and was nice enough to send me full quality files of the FG47, FG47 MKII, and FG49 for my shoot out from the RAW file I originally recorded with the ML1. I think each collection that has been released has gotten better than the previous one. I have to say these Classic Tubes 3 samples are the best I've heard from the system. I'll try to get this shoot out up before New Years. I'll post a link here once it's available.

I never could get into the idea of the preamp sitting on my desktop. I have waaaaay too little desktop space as it is. Also, Johnkenn, if you really decide you want it, I would almost guarantee Steven would honor the price if you contact him directly. I don't jive with the heavy marketing spiel his company puts out, but he is seriously quite amazing on the customer service front.

What’s the deal without the pre? I would think the Apollo pres might serve the same purpose, right?

What’s the deal without the pre? I would think the Apollo pres might serve the same purpose, right? that’s right. When Slate launched, they said their pre was necessary to ensure the models would sound like they intended. Over time, they eventually said any good, clean pre should be fine.

IMHO it worked best with Slate’s preamp. It worked fine with the Apollo preamps though. The difference was real negligible, but there was something more hifi with the slate preamp. I imagine something like a Grace preamp or any other high end clean preamp would work fine.
Slate found more people would by the mic without the preamp than with it. He made a huge mistake with the system when he changed from the original rack mounted, 2 channel design, that came with both the ML1 & ML2, and had both digital and analogue outputs, to what we actually got. The preamp is clean and boring, but perfect for what he’s doing.
