Considering I can't even get UA to respond to my emails to come say hello over here, I'm kind of like fuck 'em.

It’s just kind of annoying. I guess they don’t need another 300,000 page views per month. Actually, they probably don’t...but maybe I won’t give them any more free advertising

I can't really explain but I do know that the unofficial rep at UA forum is no where near as active there as they use to be. They also used to be on GS a fair bit, but I think that dropped off to.

There has always been sort of a snooty air with UA. That’s not sour grapes, it’s just true. Hell, I’ve got 45 plugs and an Apollo, so they’ve got me.

John, I’m after a great sounding little 8ch AD/DA for lightweight small mobile gigs where I don’t want to drag the RADAR out (no pres needed). It’s come down to an Aurora (n) 8, the Symphony 8 MKII, and a Burl 16 with 8 AD and 8 DA (the most expensive option of the 3). I’m anxious to hear what you think of these new Symphonys. I’m also anxious to hear how my 10+ year old Nyquist 96K RADAR cards stack up against current technology!
One of the advantages of the Symphony MKII is that it has a Thunderbolt option whereas the Burl seems to be generally confused about interfacing options. A Thunderbolt interface for the B16/B32 Motherships seems like a slam dunk...but nope.

Just my opinion...but I thought the Burl AD had a sheen on top - kindve “hi-fi.” I mean, not that it sounded bad at all - but I ultimately decided I didn’t want everything I recorded to be imprinted with that. Maybe some think of that as detail...and with the big bottom and top, I could see how some would associate it with a tape machine at 30ips.
This is just from memory, but I remember being shocked with how detailed the Lavry Blue was. Almost clinical. Super “tight” everywhere.

That is also my exact fear regarding the Burls, Not sure if I want that xformer sat sound on all my recordings. Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah the Burl would make a great second converter, but just not something I would want for my one and only.

Why don't you turn that Apollo on right now, here. With us.

Funny you guys mentioned the original Apollo thread. Cowboycoalminer started it, kcat, me, Ragan and a few others were there in the first week the Apollo was released. We had over a million views. I believe it was the most viewed thread in internet history. That was because of the tone cowboycoalminer set and we all maintained. I too was surprised UAD didn't acknowledge the tremendous support they were getting from a few posters that led to an incredible success for them. They were clearly well aware of it.
I would have thought the least they could have done was throw a free pass for plug-ins cowboycoalminer's way.
I think they're quite corporate, and are slow to respond to customer desires, but they made such a solid product that works every day without issue, they did deliver what they promised. They do seem to have a distant relationship with customers, except for Gannon who tries his best to stay connected and help if he can. As time goes by, I'll eventually get a different interface, and keep the satellite as a dongle for some of their plugs. The ATR-102 tape plug-in has been on every mix of mine, and is an important part of how I get the sound I want. When you need the EMT-140, it delivers the vibe, but I like some other plates now too.
That Apollo thread was how many of us got here, we grew tired of the ranting and trolls over at the purple site, and found a more professional and helpful place to land, all thanks to John. Despite an occasional bump in the road, it's amazing how well we've all managed to keep the vibe cool here.
Can't wait to hear your comparisons John, I'm really glad you're doing this.

I root for no one here, but it's entirely possible the RGO Apollo threads went unappreciated by UA.

If I could afford a Burl Mothership loaded up with their cards I’d be set for life. I love what they have going on.
I also look at the top 50 songs on Spotify and realize the people making those songs are probably doing it with some bare minimum gear...
Makes my head hurt.

I think I even contributed with my...ugh ummm...few posts on that thread! When I received my FireWire sf Apollo 8 Quad...the workflow with my Dbox was golden! The sound, not so much! I was expecting 2192 conversion! It wasn’t even close to that! I was probably the most disappointed of the bunch, but I was still trucking along trying to use it because of the workflow and latency free plugins.

I loved the burl sound but thought it like double chocolate: rich, but not all the time. Like I said above, for me, the Smkii is just this very, very good happy medium that helps me feel more confident about what I am doing and make decisions faster. I do understand others may better appreciate other boxes: sonics are all very personal actually
