So I just picked up my FuzzyPhone mic from the post office. I thought I'd give my impressions, and as promised, some examples.
First, I was impressed with how fast the communication was, especially considering time differences from Oregon to France. Second, the unit was shipped very fast and shipping was only like 12 euro if I remember correctly.
My initial impression of the mic was that the build quality was mediocre. The metal case feels light and cheap. Also the mic clip, that is physically attached to the bottom of the mic, instantly broke off. The clip has a swivel, and with very little force it just cracked in half and broke off. I've yet to contact the manufacturer but I'm guessing they can send me a new clip, it seems easy enough to unscrew the old one and replace it.
So a little about these examples. With the mic clip broken, mic placement became a challenge. For these examples I just placed the fuzzyphone flat on my desk, and positioned it about 8-12" away from the where the neck meets the body of my girlfriends guitar. I used a boom stand to position a 421 as closely aligned to the fuzzyphone as I could. Both were recorded through AML ez1073's, no eq, no compression, no additional processing. Recorded at 24bit, 48k (but I'm not sure what Soundcloud may truncate that to). These are not level matched, this is not a scientific comparison. I only provided the 421 as a reference. I figured its a widely owned mic and most people are familiar with its sound. The guitar is a Breedlove Acoustic, tuned to C-G-C-G-B-D.
Test 1 is with FuzzyPhone dialed down at 0
Test 2 is with FuzzyPhone dialed at 12 o'clock (or 50%)
Test 3 is with FuzzyPhone dialed at 100%
You'll notice how much the wave gets clipped with the higher amounts of distortion, and how reactive it is to my strumming. Here's the link. I'll see if I can figure out how make these downloadable. They sound really cool when you blend a little distortion into the clean 421.
