I think we had a big thread about this within the year. I'm currently with Joe Montarello's “The Recording Studio Insurance Program”. No claims here, have a friend who had a studio emptied of everything, they were taken care of.

This is the second vote for Joe and 1 for MusicPro so far.

In my (lack of) market there's no agent with any clue what I do. Joe at least understood what I do and have, seemed to ask the right questions before pricing it out. I'm sure there are agents in some markets who would also have a grasp.

Fewer than you think, if you operate out of residence it gets very complicated and over the head of most agents quickly, a Separate commercial property based Buisness policy is simpler, but most agents are sales guys who will just answer "yes to questions they don't understand and you find your the one who gets screwed in the end. Even if you are not doing commercial work if you have $8000 worth of instruments and gear I advice a specific rider or 2, if you have more than $8k worth of anything other than cars get a rider!

I use www.musicproinsurance.com/ They covered my gear while it was in the possession of the movers. I spoke with Joe Montarello and he said his company wouldn't cover my gear while it was being moved by a 3rd party, but he would cover it when it arrived and I was ready to set up. MusicPro is more about covering the gear itself. Joe's thing was about insuring people that have actual facilities (like Avatar or NRG) more than the guy with a home studio. Their premium is 1.25% of the gear's value, charged annually.

I use music pro, but only to cover my gear, not liability. I found their liability very expensive and got better quotes from just business insurance companies. I don't really do enough recording for others to keep the liability. I just get temp certs when I need them.

Wanted to bump this thread to see if people are still happy with Music Pro as an insurance provider or have other suggestions? Mostly concerned with my recording gear and instruments in studio but also when touring starts back up would be nice to have that covered as well. With this being a wild year before all the fires here in CA I'm feeling the urgency to all my operational things in order.

I want to go with Music Pro, but $10K a year (on $750,000) is pretty steep. . . and I know, the alternative is much much worse. I'm currently maxed out at $250,000 but only costs me $1525 a year.

Commercial insurance ain’t cheap my friend! If and this is a major if, you can find a decent local commercial insurance brokerS and have great documentation ( nobody ever thinks about how much they invested in cables stands ect) you can shop around. Don’t listen to what any agent says though read the policy and research using google! Agents are sales guys and most have forgotten 90% of what they learned in class for their license. Kind of like that guy who has no idea what a yield sign means!

I've got a policy with Nationwide, and I was with the Hartford before that.

Thanks for all the info guys. Just about have my list together to do some shopping (like Eric mentioned I didn't have cables and stands and other misc things that add up to a surprisingly expensive chunk on the list).
