I thought it was extremely mid-rangey...bought it - sold it.

This statement tells us nothing. Didn't you already do that with the Symphony, Sta Level, and Heritage pre?

Damn - I get no respect around here...
The difference is, I don't have any desire to buy it back - which I have done with the Symphony, Sta-Level and Heritage.

Damn - I get no respect around here... U can take JK's assessments on gear to the bank, here's the formula, if he bought, sold, bought, sold, bought, sold, it sucks! If you take off the last "sold", it's a winner! It's actually pretty easy!

Sometimes my ability to afford it determines whether it stays or not.

The way I look at it, only spend the overflow on gear...not the mortgage/rent, or the phone bill money or the government's money. After your bills are paid, why not use the extra on yourself? Think of it the way many folks do when it comes to shopping. Do they really need those shoes/pants/kayak/ATV/yacht/rims/iPhone etc? No... they buy things to make them feel good and improve their quality of life. We can buy things that contribute to our work, our art, our income and improve our quality of life and joy in doing so!

Well, "got rid" is such a harsh term...I "released it in the wild"... I love the thing - but it was mostly a budget issue. It's definitely a great color, but not a color for everything. I just found myself being able to get similar gain reduction results in the box. Maybe not as good, but similar. That's a lot of money for me to have tied up in one box that I'm not using on everything - kind of a luxury item for me. I found myself only using it on vox - which was awesome - but I just felt like I could get by without it right now and pay off some other stuff. I track bass occasionally, but direct into the Heritage then the UAD LA2 was pretty impressive as well. As far as replacing, I'm not sure yet. I'm gonna see how life tracks without it for a while...ITB compression for mixing...Maybe try the Brute again...maybe the Anamod 660...really liked both of those. The great thing about the Retro stuff is - they're always available if I change my mind... What I just said ^...complete poop.

Since I put those NOS RCA, Mullard, etc. valves into my RI STA-LEVEL recently, well, fuck me man, it's sounding AMAZINGLY GOOD.
Vocals and bass so far. ESPECIALLY the bass.
Sex party in my pants is what we're talking about here.
Why in the name of all that is holy would I ever sell this thing? I hope I ain't THAT stupid.

NOS tubes are most the time a very good and easy upgrade to tube gear. Why is it that we don't make things as good as we use too? Such a bummer.

Damn...I bet you bought the one I was after... This one came up just yesterday over on GS, from a long-time user with a great track record of gear buying/selling. I have most definitely broken through my buyer's block. Now, the challenge is to stop. Some day.

cool matt! let us know how u like? I certainly will! But, based on general user experience and personal pre-bias, I am sure it will be killer on vocs/bass/acoustic.
