I'd sure like to get my hands on an original to compare. They show up on evilbay from time to time but out of my price range.

I don't really have any desire for a Gates at all. Same would be if I had a RI176 compared to the UA...

Has anyone tried the Drip STA Level against the RI ? I am very tempted to build one!

I can solder but still have not taken the plunge. I've got a few friends that have done projects before and I'd feel a lot better about doing a project side by side... or at least in steps... I could stuff a PCB on my own, but wiring would be nice to have some guidance. Also, don't wanna shock myself to death.

Apart from the Grayhill switches (which at first get your heart going) it is really, really not difficult. Search "Chunger" and VP26 on google and you will find an absolutley fantastic photographic build diary that literally walks you through every step of the way with hints and warnings etc. Honestly - if you can operate a soldering iron - you can do this. And the best thing is IT SOUNDS FANTASTIC!!!!

Nice! I want to make them next. I hadn't done anything before the VP26 which was so much fun I ordered a Drip Pultec and a Capi LC53a to do simultaneously. Got to say the LC53A is a challenge - such little space for so much! [EDIT: Hat's off to Jeff for both an engineering as well as sonic miracle!] but it was literally my second build and totally do-able. Really want to try the VP28 when funds allow. My intended use would be for the mix bus and I am having a hard time trying to decide whether to go Missing Link or VP28.

You really went for the gusto with the Drip Pultec! vp28's are great on mix buss... but hear the ML's are too. Prob can't go wrong with either.

The Drip pultecs are super easy and sound great!
Sal, you could do a vp312 di. I think it's my favorite CAPI pre specially when followed by the Missing Links. Plus, the di is great. It would be a good first build.

I think that would be the price if someone built it for you. It also depends on tubes. New tubes are cheap. NOS tubes cost hundreds more. I've heard a pair with very basic stuff and they sounded great. I just got my pair of pcb's finally and I am building them up this week hopefully.
That link I posted had a list of parts and cost.

Looks like $850 or so. Pretty good actually. How does the build compare to a vp28? Solid instructions? Could this be next on my bench?

I saw a point to point Pultec kit somewhere awhile back. Anyone know which it is? I didn't bookmark it.

I would characterize my Sta Level as a compressor for dummies.... Ward mentioned fader rides above and that's a good description. It's like an LA2A with a brain. Ha. True.
