Unfortunately Oliver Archut is not with us anymore. Oliver actually gave me advice on my purchase of my M49s. He was a gracious person. He also told me that the M49 was his favourite of the Neumann microphone family and was to build his own version of the Lucas being the CS9. I was looking forward to hearing and purchasing one for my studio. I have been trying to find more info on a regular basis to see if there will still be a CS9 based or exacting to his design. I am very happy with the CS4 and CS1 . The CS4 is a U47 style and the CS1 in the lines of a C12 AKG. They sound unique in their own right, but are beautiful creations. I would think the CS9 would also be a work of art.
Anyone hear if the CS9 of Oliver's is in the works? There seemed to be a lot of hope early on but nothing that I have found as of late. I know there was distancing from other parties involved due to legalities involved in Oliver's passing, but I think the tribute to Oliver would be great if the CS9 came to fruition .

Getting a custom m49 built with Dany’s M7 capsule. Should be a winner. I have little experience with M49’s so i am taking a plunge in the deep end here.

What is the consensus about Dany’s M7? The SAE48 had it. My only other experience with M7s has been the FleA F7 in jtc111 ‘s FleA 47 and a few FleA 49s I tried. Personally I felt the FleA F7 had a smoother sound, but it could be the over all components in the microphones as well. Everyone always talks about Thiersch’s M7s. Anyone know how they all compare? Enjoy your 49 hadaja . I love mine!

It’s outstanding. But I have been flirting with the idea of putting a Neumann K49 capsule in there. Who’s building yours for you?

Enjoy your 49 hadaja . I love mine! I have two vintage U47’s, one with K47, and one with Berlin M7. So I bought one of Dan’s M7’s (D7) and one of his head baskets as a drop in “backup” if something should happen to one of the originals. (The head basket is well made and fits my U47’s body perfectly. BUT... The capsule is bright. And I mean quite bright. Compared to either of the originals (k47 or M7), it really takes off above 6khz. It was definitely a disappointment. But, for less than the cost of an empty head basket from T-Funk USA, I got a great head basket and a capsule that’s good enough for emergencies, or troubleshooting. I wrote Danny about it and expressed that I thought it wasn’t ready for prime time, and he kind of agreed with me... He said the capsule was “in constant evolution” and he hoped to settle on a final version in a year or so. (This was last summer). Maybe my feedback was helpful and he’s dialled it in better now? I hope so. He seems like a guy who cares a lot about details.

Great video! To me... FLEA 47 = Rock/Soul. FLEA 49= Classical/Operatic/Smooooth Ballads. I highlighted Intro/Singing/Outtro. There's a Jackie Wilson kind of vibe, with the FLEA 47, with your voice BTW. I also preferred the M49 harmony, on Spanish Eyes. Thanks, Chris P.S. I made the above evaluations, before your evaluation, at the end.

The Rap/Hip Hop Producers tend to "follow the leader" (C800G/U87ai/Ref C)...
But IMHO that FLEA 47, would be on my A list, for that sort of thing too. Chris

I've never tried another capsule in the specific mic and I haven't tried the D7 in any other mics, so I can't really separate the sound of the capsule from the mic. It's possible Chris did some things in the circuit of my mic to tame the high end of the capsule. But overall the high end on my M49 with D7 is pretty mellow. The high end is comparable to the Gefell UM70S with M7 capsule I used to have. And it's definitely more mellow than my U87ai or 414, which is to be expected. Along with my MK67 it's my most mellow condenser.

Hey adamjbrass are you still enjoying your Barbaric Amplification BA-49? Have you made any changes to it?

I just listened to a comparison that I did a few years ago that included a vintage Neumann M 49 and the Blackspade UM-17 R that I used to have. Originally that mic was designed to be similar to an M 49, and then Oliver Archut changed it to sound a little closer to a U47.
Listening again, I realize how close the Blackspade really was to the M 49, in fact I preferred it. Over the vintage M49!
Too bad I sold it, but it turned out a U 67 is a better fit my voice, so I’ve been pursuing that.

Besides my own little song demos for fun, (not trying too hard there) I have been using the mic for my pyramix tutorials,

Same tube and tranny at least (I think).
I put a Heiserman 47 in my UM17 and love it!

Its an M-49c circuit with 5840W, Redline M7, but we put in a BV8R instead of a BV11R

So Barbaric makes their stock BA models which is probably what you saw on the website, but he also makes custom mics where you can choose whatever components you want and Chris will put it all together for you. Adam and I both went the custom route although we chose mostly different parts in our 49s. Here is the link to Barbaric's custom mics: barbaricamplification.com/custom-tube-microphones/

Thanks for that. I understand now.
What Adam had built specs very closely to the AMI/Blackspade UM17R (uses a Redline cap). IIRC, he once owned the Blackspade UM17R. I'd be curious if the two sound similar. ??

I actually wanted to own one, but through a bunch of gear pimp journeys, I ended up with a Blackspade UM25C, which I loved and used a lot for various things. I loved the UM17R, but at the time I had other priorities. Anyway, I ended up selling the UM25C, it was gorgeous sounding. The one thing that bothered me about the UM17R was the head shape. The sound is similar, they are in the same vein. The UM17R is a little thinner sounding on the low end, if memory serves.

I didn’t realize how well the 49s worked for VO until working on my FleA video. It’s nice to hear a different voice on a 49 to confirm how I felt about my own VO. Chris from Barbaric is very knowledgeable and very open to trying new things with the custom builds. adamjbrass was nice enough to discuss the process he went through while working with Chris after he first built his mic. After that I reached out and had a bunch of correspondence with Chris after I decided to get a 2nd 49. If I hadn’t lucked into a demo FleA 49 I probably would have gone that route. Been meaning to reach out to him about his custom Bottle Caps for my BLUE mic.
