Greg Hanks BA 660 tube preamp and tube compressor pair... very rich 3D sound with depth and sparkle but low distortion... great for my acoustic guitar and vocal driven music. same here, the BA-660 raised the game to another level,

My computer went to Shit recently and it was a horrible feeling ( yes I have a backup but still ) My room treatment improved my finished product more than any gear and my ears and monitors as well! The room treatment and then hearing the monitors like they were brand new! Now bout to put up my new barefoot so maybe monitors maybe more significant ..

mixing sidecar (neve), to my left... I purchased it many years ago before it became really unaffordable.

Without the soldering iron and hand tools I'd be in pretty poor shape so I'm gonna go with that. Takes a little pain off the wallet too.
Regarding microphones, specifically, the DIY 251 on voice and the e906 on guitar amp has transformed my sound, recently. Feels like a signature sound, inspires signature playing.
Regarding montitors, the Polk RTi A3 have been on mains duty for exactly 3 years with very little A/Bing. I guess I like them.

My auditory world revolves around my voice. The melodies and grooves are accented and achieve fruition as I chug and dig into my Martin D-15M, but it always comes back to my voice and the Gefell UMT70S these days that captures it.

Bass traps. I finally could hear low freq properly.
Studer mixer. Game changer from ITB to OTB.
DIY API stereo Pultec and AML 2254. They sit on Studer's output and always get a sense of "finished record" whatever genre I'm mixing through.

I don't know if any one piece of gear is responsible for my "sound." I could get a good sound with any decent microphone be it my U87ai or one of my AA mics, and a decent preamp, even one of my stock Apollo ones, and use stock plugins and get a good recording that reflects my sound. It's my knowledge of the genres I specialize in that dictates my sound. Other gear I have only helps me get there faster and easier. Dave Pensado said it best; "I can teach somebody how to get a great snare sound. I can't teach somebody what a great snare sound IS."

I think taking the time to set up a mix template is making a big impact. I have a lot of options ready to go instead of having to call up a certain reverb or effect, I just active the buss and there it is. Parallel busses, groups, and all that good stuff is in the template as well.

Lynx aurora converters. Finally able to record and listen to what my mics hear. Are they the new ones (n) or the usual suspects most love? Very sorry for the slow reply, ChaseUTB. They are the old ones. In fact, they were used and probably made in 2006 or so. I think... I forget. I love these though. 1U, and way affordable for 16 Analog IN/OUT and 16 Digital IN/OUT. The new ones are supposed to be sick sick sick, but they are in another price range than the originals for sure and I have no plans to upgrade for quite some time. In fact, the way my ears are diving now, I wouldn't be surprised if I am out of the music game by then due to hearing loss. I'd be worried I would only see a 5% improvement perceptually and that isn't worth the cash to me. I kind of tell myself, if the old Lynx Aurora was good enough to track and mix great sounding records for 10 years, then they still have to be. Kill the crap out of my old Octa Capture, bless it's heart. SaveSave

I mean, I want to try this - but every tune I do seems to be so so different each time. I use different console emus and tape emus every time based on what the tracks sound like etc. I suppose I could pre load them all to audition them and that would save time... Save

In my particular case: Sennheiser 416. It's not the prettiest sounding mic on its own, however it's very detailed, cuts through mixes with ease, takes EQ like a champ and has a certain sonic signature for VO that commercial producers know and recognize. I tried using other mics that I thought sounded more melifluous but after switching to the 416 full-time, my bookings increased enough to know right away that it was going to be my main axe for good. Still looking for a secondary mic for certain types of reads. One that does the mid-forward, detailed thing as well as the 416 but is warmer. Probably will go with an 87 variant of some sort. Thinking about DIY-ing one so I can better dial in the right level of transformer-thickness for what I need. Is that thje MD416 or the MKH416?

That's a hard question - I could go with the mic collection, I could go with the console, I could go with the Studer A-800 MKIII, and any one could be good answer, but I think the one I'm gonna go with is ................................................................. ...................................................................................................................my brain.
