I had a conversation with drbill about workflow because he pumps out approx a song a day.
All the writers studios I have seen have a super tight workflow, all the sounds (some have running over thousand sounds on separate server) where in one template.
Most of them write direct into the DAW.
I like to have this conversation because I optimize my own workflow every year.
Most often I get inspiration from seeing how others do it.
If someone has a different workflow please tell us how you do it.
Lets start with drbill.
1. DAW Sounds
How many sound libraries do you use and how they are organized that you get fast access when inspiration kicks in?
2. Tracking E/A Guitars an E-Bases
Myself I had a separate room for this but it turned out best if I just can turn around my chair and I can grab e-guitar / base / a-guitar.
I have a small tracking corner, very very dry, the most important acoustics and electrics are standing there the amps are in a separate room.
Electric Bases I most often track DI because of the kids sleeping.
3. Tracking vocals
Over the years I found out that it works best if I don't use HP for my own vocal tracking, other singers are often impressed too - how good they intonate without HP.
One Auratone is enough for it.
Most often I use a mic that cancels out most of the Auratone sound, but I also can live with spill.
Even if I compress the vocal the spill can sound very good IMO.
This also helps with the stupid HP putting on and off my head - it is very annoying to me.
What is your method to get the vocals in when the inspiration kicks in?
4. Writing process.
Over the years I made the experience that its best if I have the complete song ready with one instrument guitar, or piano.
Sometimes I use notation, but most often a lead sheet with chord symbols and the I-phone is enough to remember the intention.
From there I track a guide track in logic - guitar voice - setting markers for the song form, and I build the arrangement around this.
This helps me best to know the song form later.
For me a clear song form is essential for inspiration.
Very seldom it works if I write a song in front of the screen / DAW .
I need to touch something and because I play guitar since I am 12 its most often the guitar.
That´s it so far I could write more questions but time is tight for some of us...
