I did not hear it myself, but the T4BX looks like a very, very close recreation of the original T4B, the heart and gain reduction element, and i would not be surprised if you can not distinguish it from originals by compression behaviour alone. Which might differ quite some in the originals, too, depending on the age of the EL panels/T4Bs.... Also, i was told, the later badges of T4Bs that JBL sold out once for around 80$(?) differed in quality... Well, it has no UTCs, Sowter and Edcor transformers instead, which are by far more obtainable than A-10's or HA-100x(if you like the later recreations of the LA2a better than the vintage ones...). There always has to be a tradeoff at attractive prices. Dunno how close it could come in terms of saturation and fingerprint. But this might not be the essential thing in the LA2a anyway.....like popmann already said...

Realistically, if you want the real thing, the only option is the current Universal Audio LA2A. Vintage units are rare and too expensive. So, for me, the question is how the IGS unit compares to the curent UA ones. I, too, love the new UAD versions and wonder how much better a hardware unit might be.

Pop, speaking of DBX and plugs, have you tried the stillwell Major Tom plug? I have no reference for accuracy but a great plug regardless. I tried them as a bundle a few years ago...I don't remember anything jumping out as a must have...but, I didn't try them when I actually cut over and needed to buy. Is it supposed to be a DBX 160? I honestly have never found much use for the DBX stuff without control. Boss used to loved them...I wanted to control it if clean was the goal.

Buzz Essence anyone? Stereo 500 series for 880 - opto with trannys.
Don't see much talk about Buzz but I now they make nice gear. Too clean for people to clamor over?

So...what's the point behind the lust? Tracking something? ....or option at mix time with the assumption that hardware will sound better?

Well, I think the assumption that hardware will sound better is why any of us buy this stuff...if it doesn't, then whats the point?

So, the only reason you'd buy an analog compressor is because it sounds better? It's a tool that serves more functions...in any room and any system you take it to. My 3a has been with me for like 3 entire digital recording systems. I've tracked through it...I've mixed with it...I can put it in the (analog mixer fed) cans and NOT print it...

Yes, the only reason I buy hardware is because it sounds better...and that's even debatable. The other functions could be handled more cheaply...

I don't usually advocate for cheap hardware over high software, actually.. nevermind. Try fmraudio.com/rnla.htmlIt's a very good box for any price.

Anybody have experience with the JLM vs the Brute? I had a brute for awhile and loved it on vocal. Curious what the JLM compares to ?

I've been very happy with this unit. I'm not sure if it can be classified as "economical" though....

Well I thought I would record and print through whatever I purchase. However, after a recent vocal track where I printed after going through my Daking FET III, I'm not sure I nailed my attack time. Sounded good at the time but now wish I had an option. First time I felt this way.
From here, I may track with a plug for monitoring only and loop for compression following comping. I could take more time and hit both compressors in a faders up mix for context and still keep the original. (Sounds like committal issues)
So far it is about sonics over workflow on Vox but I can always find a home for it on mix down, maybe on bass.
I appreciate the other recc's. Had a FMR PBC6a. Fun box but likely not revisiting that brand.

I would imagine not many people have owned both...considering the JLM is an Australian product and a little more rare...but maybe! I would imagine they're similar, but I like that you can change the ratio on the JLM. Honestly, I've yet to find a 500 series compressor that I thought really rivaled some of the 19 inch brethren. There is just something about the "grab" - like the 500 series aren't as deliberate or aggressive...Obviously, you can't fit 15 tubes in a 500 series... I don't know, maybe I'm confusing the sound of an opto as compared to a vari-mu. I haven't owned or used a 19" opto in a while...so...

The Drip LA 2a is great and so is the Serpent "chimera". The chimera is a legit la3a in 500 series. It sounds great.

Matkat swears by the serpent la3a also, I have an unfinished DIY pair, looking forward to these as I trust dan and chuck's opinions wholey. The JLM is not a traditional opto comp, I almost bought a pair till I found that out, but they very well could be, and are probably great... Joe's a beast!

the JLM uses Vactrols, not T4B's. and a different transformer spec for the ins and outs. it's a completely different circuit, i believe. I'm super happy with my SA3A and PP LA3A-500's
