Yep, that shelf EQ did wonders for the low end of the guitar, very nice work.

What I found really interesting is the sound of the vocal with the tube pre is a kind of sound I try to dial out when I'm mixing, it's a bit forward, and felt a little unbalanced, maybe needing some kind of compression or automation to even it out. I felt none of that with the Neve. Colin's ez1073 is so incredible for vocals, and the EQ is very useful when tracking.

Man, you're not kidding, that vocal with that Neve was good to go. EQ when tracking is the deal, I'll have to play around with my UAD 1073 plug-in with the EQ, just for fun and to get familiar with the 1073. I used my friend's Great River preamp, and it was excellent, but Randge and a few others say the RTZ 9262A is all that and a little more. I might get the Stam 1073 at some point.
I did try vintage Neve's at a studio last summer, and I prefered the SSL boards preamps in that situation, but if that recording's an indication, I should be quite happy with one of the 1073 style pres I mentioned above.

We have ABed the AML ez1073 against the Vintech (I may have even put that on here - don't remember). The Vintech is fine, but on vocals it does this weird "pinched" thing in the upper mids. Not sure how else to describe it, other than it fatigues my ears whereas the AML does not. It's smooth as butter.
Don't know how it compares to a vintage Neve. Kinda don't really care either! It sounds great on every vocal with every mic I've run through it so far.
Dialing in the tube pre for my guitar has been a fun project. Need to try it on some other instruments now like upright bass, mandolin, banjo. I doubt it will be a go-to fiddle preamp, but you never know. There might be a fiddle out there that could be well matched to it.
I've been considering building one more for myself, and possibly one more to sell to help recoup some costs.

Dam that's 1010 a channel and you still had to build it? They look amazing and sound even better than amazing however that price easily puts me in a GR MP2NV with left over change ( I know no eq ) however for $100 -200 more I can go snag a used GTQ2 for around $2200 which has HPF and 3 band eq.. Albeit probably less eq points than your beautiful looking and sounding AML's... The Flea and AML are perfect with your voice man! Glad you found your grail Vox chain ðŸ¤

Yeah the Great River is over 5 grand for Pre plus eq. The AML still comes out significantly cheaper. And damn, that sounded good.

I've got two 500 series AML ez1073's and they sound fantastic. I also have a couple Great River pres and love them, but the AML definitely lands in the ballpark of "vintage Neve" territory. AML is huge bang for the buck, and sounds phenomenal price aside.

The AML one-space kit cost me exactly $890.04 to build, including the case and everything. I'd say that's more than reasonable considering the Heritage stuff goes for upwards of $2200. You can buy the pre-built two space 500-series for right around a grand.

Idk I don't have 500 series and don't have a solder station setup currently. $891 per channel is around $1785.... compared to name brand built retail pieces that great price and quality for AML... I am not familiar with DIY pricing, Is this on the pricier side for DIY kit? Guitar I said the great river has no eq that's why I used the GTQ2 as a better apples to apples comparison, and even I said the AML sounds better than amazing and has more frequency points than the GTQ2 as well 😀 I don't have a solder station so paying someone to build is factored in my cost and I don't know what a tech would charge to build them. I don't know a local tech. I could call Tree Sound or Patchwerk to see who they use for a tech...

DIY pricing is usually something like half-ish of a comparable project bought new, sometimes plus or minus. Companies like Warm and Stam are competing even with DIY price points, usually being only slightly more expensive than rolling your own.

The AML compressor is also very interesting. Kinda want a couple of those too. The AML 54f50 is a beast. I've got a pair and they are absolutely stellar. They are on par with some of my most expensive comps like the STA Level, TSL3 and Atomic Squeezebox. Often the AML wins on a lot of sources. The 54f50 sounds gorgeous - very rich and thick with beautiful sweetness.
