I've been mixing while sitting in a worn out old chair for years now. I found a dealer having a sample sale locally, so I broke down and finally bought a new chair. I feel so much better, just seeing it near my desk, and it's so much more comfortable to sit in for a long time. I haven't mixed since I got it, but I bet there's some improvement, even if it comes from feeling classy instead of messy and not doing well enough to afford good furniture. Attachments:

I posted this to hopefully inspire the members here to treat themselves to a good chair, it's a surprisingly great feeling.

Oh, I SO need a new chair. My chair is from 1997. No joke. And it wasn't a particularly good chair in '97. An Office Depot cheapie. Was that really only $100? Nice!

I got one of the Costco mesh HM Aron nockoffs. It's great. One of the best parts is that the arm rests fold out of the way.

I feel where you guys are coming from. Every dollar spendable on gear always seems to be needed elsewhere. You can get a useable pair of SDC's, a good plug in, a sturdier mic stand, an audio rack, a decent power center, and on and on.
Even after posting this, I can't fully express how much better I feel about sitting down at my desk. It feels something like I came back from vacation and I'm looking forward to getting back to work.
I typically browse through Craigslist for just a couple of minutes a day. I enjoy seeing what's being sold, even if I'm not buying. I look at microphones, guitars, preamps, and I've been looking at desks and chairs. I noticed this chair in white a couple of months ago, but the seller was asking $250. I eventually found them new for $265. That was still too high for me, but I narrowed down my choices to two styles. When I saw this same chair in black at a sample sale at a dealer, I jumped on it.
The seller told me he had around 35 calls, but not many people follow through and make it to his office/showroom, I hustled over here. It wasn't a fancy place, really, a big office, not a store.
Here's what I think you guys should consider, I promise, you won't believe the difference this will make for you.
Look at Craigslist for 5 minutes a day, narrow down your preferences, put $50 aside so you can jump when you see something. You'll forget about the $50, and if you ned $25 more dollars to get something, it won't pinch too much. This dealer had other great chairs not shown in his add for $50, new, just that they were floor samples.

A year or so ago the guys from the office down the street were hauling a Areon with a cracked seat to the dumpster while I was walking the dogs, new seat bottom and it's my console chair!

I got a nice (probably faux) leather one from old Costco for a little over $100 and it was worth every penny. My studio partner and I each like to sit at different heights, arms come up if I want to overdub a guitar part or what have you.... Great investment. I was using a folding chair for a couple years before that. Ugh. Rolling around to adjust outboard stuff also gives me an inflated sense of self worth

I never looked back since I got my Aeron, no wonder they're so popular.

Carl Tatz Design is now selling an Audio Engineer-Specific chair in the USD $600.00 range. I recently got two nice chairs at Staples for around $150.00 each.

Okay your bottom side is all better. Next stop, what you look at all day seriously impacts your stamina. Even as I can deal with the 32 inch TV parked on my desk, I MUCH preferred the 39 inches I used until I opted for this really cool looking rolltop and 32 was the max size that would fit. It is a pretty good TV, but size matters, as well as operating temp and resolution and brightness/contrast flexibility....

Great thread and posts... The more comfortable you are in your environment the better you mix! I also have a sepearated vertabrae l3/ l4 on top of my broken hip and leg stuffed with titanium and bolts. My Chair was a Xmas gift and I assume around the $150 -$200. When I first got it I was amazed, now it is very uncomfortable for me. It's not leather, it's almost like a bunch of strings wound tight where you sit instead of a cushion, so it gives a bit. Unfortunately sitting anywhere for more than 20 min becomes uncomfortable, and standing to mix is an option, I just don't see it as a smart choice for a couple reasons.

Dang Chase, I broke my femur in half in 1996, and I've got three titanium rods in my leg that are so big, I can't believe they actually got them in there!
I had those string seat chairs too, but the strings stretch, and then force you to sit at slightly weird angles to get comfortable which makes your muscles hurt.
Dump it, sell it for $20 on Craigslist if you can, and get thee a new chair!

I tried to keep it as short as possible! On Friday the 13th nov. 13, 2015, An Suv clipped the back tire of the beach cruiser I was riding as I tried to jump a curb to avoid them hitting me while they ran a red light to turn. Was on the way to get my car out of the shop b4 the place closed for the weekend. 2 adults with jobs and 4th grader - 1 car = impossible with public transit, metro Atlanta is huge now. There was about a 5' drop to concrete after/ under the curb unbeknownst to me, which I landed on my left side after flying over the handlebars and curb. No one stopped to help, no one got their tag, I had to call for help, Police did nothing, told me to call my insurance company I didn't have, and ordered me a $5000 ambulance ride to a doc in the box ( idiots ) Got xrayed and ordered me another $5000 ambulance to a hospital ICU. Two surgeries and a week in the hospital, I left in a wheelchair and as a non smoker and havent smoked cigarettes since After $200,000 plus medical bills, I'm on a cane after doing physical therapy every week since March. Can't run, can't jump, can't walk a city block without a cane...... Yet.....Very humbling experience that has taught me a lot about myself and my family.

Man, that's just disgusting Chase. To leave someone you've injured is about as low as a human can get. Hopefully there's a little change left over for a new chair, you deserve it, and need it!

Sorry to hear of your troubles Chase. I hope and pray that you heal as well as expected and find Freedom From Pain. Thank you for your kind words, and yes the pain can be unbearable at times. Martin John Butler I know the experience all to well and you are correct, the strings give and don't provide solid support. I can't lie, even if I had a beautiful new chair like yours after about 30 min. I would have to stand, grab the cane, and do some of stretches then grab an ice pack. The better the music the less the pain I'm kinda young still and pray that this isn't something I deal/ suffer from with for another 40-50 years..

My chair is a shortish bar stool with no back, which I use to force myself to sit up straight. I had a mild cervical vertebrae injury back when I was 26 (my wedding day - don't ask.. just imagine ) that comes back to haunt me on occasion, and also have some lower back pain that I have to deal with, but reading this makes me SO appreciative of my health.
