So I just received the Audio Technica M-50s. I've been A/Bing them against my AKG K240 Mk IIs and figured I'd share my thoughts. At roughly the same price point ($150) there's a world of difference. I'm listening to my own mixes as well as a few difference reference recordings. Maybe I'm use to my 240's but I'm finding the M-50's difficult to enjoy.
The M-50s need a lot less output to level match and yet the bass is bigger and deeper. They definitely move some air down there. It could be a better set of cans for mixing those frequencies, but I suspect those frequencies are hyped a bit. Especially once you get up to 150-200hz, where things seem almost muddy.
The M-50s provide much better isolation (the 240s are semi-closed), but I'm finding the 50s harsher, the mid-lows (300hz-900hz) seem pulled back and from there it just seems like there are random bumps as you go higher - there's no warmth. I was listening to a live recording of a drum solo, and the high hat sounded like trash can lids compared to the 240s. I'm thinking the M-50 may be better for tracking (because of their efficiency you can crank 'em) but I just can't imagine mixing on them.

I've never heard the AT's, but some headphones need to break in for a while.... hopefully that's the case here.
