I'm looking to add a pair of 500 Series preamps so I can just carry a lunchbox when doing some remote singer/songwriter stuff.
Ideally, I'll be trading some compressors to get the pair, so I'm looking for something on the more inexpensive side (550 each used value or so).
Any suggestions on the ideal candidates? I don't want clean because my UH-7000 can cover that group or API because I have 6 channels at my disposal at a place I've been renting and don't really want the redundancy. Main uses will be acoustic guitar and vocals, with some electric guitar thrown in.
I'm thinking a pair of MA5's maybe? Vintech pair? Shadow Hills seem to have jumped up in price over the last 2 years, so they're out right? Any thoughts?

You can usually find Purple Audio preamps at a fair price used and I really like the Biz. Really unique. I've seen them around $300 used

I've got two of the original Lolas. Absolutely love them, and the build is super easy.

Lola's. Shadow Hills look good on paper, but honestly, not significantly different than API's to my ear....

Why not a Rupert Neve Designs 511 500 Series Mic Pre? It's $545.00 list, has a HPF and Silk for texture/or not. This is anecdotal, but my friend had a Vintech 500 series and said it did not sound as good as my rack version with it's own PS.

Surprised by the love for the Lola's. I figured the Hairball stuff was just cheap junk. Guess I was wrong.
I'm just going to post a thread and see what offers I get, go from there.

Sound good, but looking for something that I don't already have access to.

The Hairball stuff is extremely well made, and not too difficult to put together. Awesome customer service too.

How about the Don Classics NV73? Anyone want to give those bad boys up?

How about the Don Classics NV73? Anyone want to give those bad boys up? They cost to much to give them up for cheap! You save money over the Neve or Heritage but still expensive considering capi or hairball. The dyre color pre could be interesting. Change out the colors for texture.

How about the Don Classics NV73? Anyone want to give those bad boys up? My favorite preamp I own. DIY cost of ~450 for the stand alone and ~700 with the EQ makes it probably the most affordable authentic 1073! Never giving it up. Have heard great stuff about the hairball pres as well.

For $328/ or $390 you can get a ma1 germanium preamp from pier poalo (sp.) on here. A few members here at RGO seem to love them for what they do. There is also a thread which svart linked a few posts above mine.
Also, cheaper doesn't always equate to better which we all know. A lot of people recommend Hairball Audio, aside from price point, what other things do you like about Hairball audio pres?

I feel like a germ preamp will be too dirty for what I'm looking for...also worried about resale from something like that. I buy and sell almost as much as JK, so that's always in the back of my mind.
