Plugins.
I feel like plugins don't make me a lot of money, and are instantly worth less the second you buy them. People come to my studio at this point because of word of mouth from past projects, and my mic/outboard collection. Plugins don't directly help get me any new clients. That being said, if they help my end product then they do help indirectly.

I've MADE more money off of my Avid/Pro Tools Mix / HD/ HDX systems back that I can count. Easily the #1 money maker for the studio's that I've ever had. Certainly more than that MCI 2" that cost a fortune to buy, and two fortunes to maintain. Or the D&R console that's worth 20% of what I paid for it. The only thing that is fairly consistent on holding value is OLD mics. I bought an HD2 system for 2800, and a 192 for 1600 plus additional AD card for 500.
HD-X was on the horizon, sold the HD2 for 1k, but the 192 held strong at 2k. That was 3-4 years ago I think?
There was also a receipt in the box for the HD2 from the original buyer - $18000... oof. I guess if you have some taxes to write off that may at least get you to a lower tax bracket?
I'm amazed there's still a market for those old Blue 192s. The Avid HD i/o is 100x better. I took the trade-in deal from Avid and sent in my old Blue 192s for the HD i/os. I think that was the best deal I ever got from Avid. The upgrade cost wasn't that great at all.

This was also 2012, HD I/o wasn't out yet. I smelled the change in the air...

Soundtracs Solitaire console.. I ended up selling it 8 years later for a 20th of the price.. It did however make a lot of money when it was in use so the sale wasn't so bad in that sense, but the actual value drop was BIG.. Old digital technology in general for me like Akai S1000 etc..

Just scored a free Kawai Upright on Craigslist from a gentleman moving out of his home. Hopefully I can't lose money on this one.

suffice to say I payed too much for a bunch of things. this thread has reminded me from the outset of an old joke regarding the stock market. I'm sure you've all heard it. how do you make a small fortune in the stock market? start with a big fortune.

That reminds me of my favorite music joke from another thread.
What does a jazz musician do when she wins the lottery? Keeping gigging until she's broke again.
I guess the stock market has a lot of parallels with the music industry. Maybe even a direct connection now that I think about it.

Opcode Sonic Port USB AD/DA
It went from $700 to doorstop in a nano second.
I bought it brand new from a dealer. 3 months later it died.
I took it back under warranty (I thought) only to be told that Gibson had purchased Opcode and were no longer honouring Opcode's warranty.
I still have it if anyone's interested in a doorstop.

I bought one of the PureAnalog DuaLevel Vari-Moo compressors hand made by Charles McHan which is a Gates Sta-Level type comp. Mine is M/S too. Nice comp and beautifully crafted with a "Lifetime Warranty"
These were being sold on the Vintage Loop website and ebay. There was a splash on the GS forum from other buyers and endorsers.
Anyway, Charles McHan has gone missing along with his company and any hope of repair or a tune up has been dashed. Vintage Loop has 'disavowed any knowledge' of the products manufacturer and said they were going to remove the DuaLevel from the site but a google search still comes up with the page.
I still use mine and like it very much but doubt there will be much interest if I ever decide to sell.
