By the way, the Jordanaires did use figured bass Roman numerals. It's pretty amazing to think that figured bass managed to remain relevant for hundreds of years. It's rather inadequate for jazz, but other than that..

It was used as a basis for singing in church. I can assure you that the three hour services at Bach's church weren't spent listening to the preacher. Jazz preserved the oral tradition of improvisation that had gotten set aside during the Victorian era worship of written music and arm-wavers.
