Also grabbed a Fathead in the recent ZenPro sale. Man I love these things. Such nice beef on guitar cabs and such a useful sound on a lot of other things. Not bad for friggin' $159. I had the Lundahl xformer version before but I've compared them and there's almost no difference and when I've blind AB'd it it's 50/50 which I pick. So went bone stock this time. Super happy.

I've replaced my old 2x2 27" monitor array with a Samsung 55" U8500 curved 4K TV. My trashcan mac will run it at 3840x2160 60hz if it's connected correctly using one of the T-Bolt ports and with support by an app called SwitchResX. It's glorious, and the best $700 I've spent on gear in a long time.

Thanks for the tip on the APP!! I was curious about what to do to change Rez like that! Any time! You need it to run at 60hz; for the trashcan, OSX will only report 30hz as a refresh rate option without it. It's a bit confusing though, because the website for ResX says you need to disable SIP in OSX in order to get the 60hz option to be stored as a monitor config but I didn't have to do that.

Grabbed some great vintage preamps from Tom at Gruning Audioworks. A pair of Telefunken V672, and a pair of Sphere 1200b. And they both are home runs. The V672 sounds so present I feel like I have a CL1B, and the Sphere is like a Quad Eight on steroids.

Attachment DeletedThis 500 series blank panel nearly broke the bank but I think it’s really going to improve workflow and client wow-factor. I’m looking forward to the tone it imparts when a client opens up a shaken beer bottle and the contents explode into the insides of my 500 series rack. I’ve read that hops residue creates a nice glue effect on the sound.

I just got the Sonarworks Reference 4 Premium bundle that includes the measurement mic, software, and custom calibrated Sennheiser HD650 headphones. I have a pretty good bump at around 200Hz that I confirmed going through the acoustic measurement process and no amount of acoustic treatment seemed to rectify the problem. I am pretty amazed at how the software really helps with mixing the low end and how it then translates to other mediums like the car, earbuds, soundbars, etc. It also has the systemwide software so that any reference track I listen too comes out of the monitors with the same calibration.

I got three new Beyerdynamic boundary mics today (untested yet), Two BOSS pedals (Bass Overdrive and GE-7 Equalizer), another Pitchblack tuner, an new One Spot Pro power supply for my main pedalboard... all lots of fun so far, especially the GE-7 into the Marshalls. And all the pedals are quiet now thanks to the One Spot Pro CS12. But the main attraction is the new Presonus Quantum. I sold both of my Apollos in the past 3 weeks. Latency, even at 128 block size buffer, is audibly undetectable. Sound quality is excellent. No separate control software, everything is done within Cubase now (or your DAW.) This really does feel like the "interface of the future" for me. I still might buy a high end DAC, perhaps, and a high end headphone amp, but as a main interface I give it two thumbs up! EDIT: To elaborate a little bit, low end clarity is up quite a few notches from Focusrite Clarett. Top end is maybe a few percent less pristine than Clarett.

the main attraction is the new Presonus Quantum. I have a DP88 as well, how does the sound compare to the Quantum? I'm going to probably start digging deeper into A/B comparisons today, do some demo sessions. As of yet, I've simply plugged everything in and I'm just going through reference material to learn the DAC of the Quantum. It's very "honest" sounding it's a little less shiny and clean than the Clarett. Just a notch less clinical sounding. It seems to have a bit more size in the sound stage. But I also find it to be very neutral, like a DAC should be. I can hear deeply into any mix. It's fun to listen to. Dynamic range specs are almost the same for these two (1 dB difference.) The Clarett has significantly lower THD specs. I wonder if that says anything. I can also verify that the front panel DI sounds excellent. My P bass was fat and thumping. Workflow is super efficient. The Quantum headphone amps are on the weak side. I had to turn them almost all the way up to power my AKG K702 (Points on the card for the Clarett.)

I added 2 DIYRE OLA5 compressors to my rack. Had to pull a capi vp312 to fit them in. Need to finish my other 500 rack.

That thing is $700 and has a tbolt connection? And is 55”? That seems too big...and looking at pic ? JK, the TV is a Samsung Curved 55-Inch 4K Smart LED TV model UN55MU8500FXZA. It does not have a T-Bolt port. I use an adapter, Club 3D, CAC-1170, Active Mini DisplayPort to HDMI 2.0 Adapter ($24) to go from T-Bolt (Mini DisplayPort) to HDMI and into the TV. My research showed that the adapter has to be "active" (whatever that means) and must support 4K 60hz; not all adapters do this. Also, available info on the Mac says that the 2013 Trashcan will only support 4K 30hz so I bought the app SwitchResX ($16) which allows for custom display configuration. However, I'm not sure it's necessary because I quit the app while troubleshooting some minor interference in the display (there's a barely visible vertical line that looks like static that comes and goes, very odd and doesn't seem to be a screen issue) and OS X still reports 60hz as a refresh rate. The only thing I can think of is OS X Sierra adds new screen resolution when detected from an attached screen. Not sure why, but it works. Aesthetically, the screen is fantastic- it blows away my old 2x2 monitor array. I like sitting close, personal taste would matter a lot here. But my bandmates love it too. With the TV set up in "PC" mode it is very nearly as sharp as a dedicated computer monitor. I'd say, 95%+ as sharp. Pro Tools looks great and it has changed how much time I spend editing. I'll never go back to multi-monitors.
