Thanks I might! Especially if they are ELCO to XLR (8 male 8 female) I've got all kinds of different configs, different lengths, etc.. Pretty much enough to build an entire TT/Elco bay system and wiring infrastructure.

Benchmark DAC1
I really needed a good DAC for monitoring with volume control. I know it's old but man it sounds pristine!!!

While everyone has been discussing the new Heritage Elite, WA73, and the Stam SA73 MKII, I jumped on a chance to grab a Dan Alexander Dual Channel Class A reracked Neve preamp. This pre sounds like a record. I can’t explain it any other way. Unfortunately, it arrived in less than perfect working order and had to spend two weeks in the shop for repairs, but it’s back and I can’t wait to start recording with it. I have a feeling much of the vocals for my Christmas album will be recorded through this baby.

Yours isn’t the version with real Neve boards, it’s the later version with Dans recreations and real vintage transformers. Dead ringer for the real thing.

So, just to clarify the two different versions are the blue face with the original Neve circuit boards and after market transformers, and the black face with after market circuit boards and original Neve transformers? I need to find time to try it next to the Stam. Maybe it’s time to head to Martin John Butler ’s place again with the preamp, a tube mic, and a splitter cable.

I need to find time to try it next to the Stam. Maybe it’s time to head to Martin John Butler ’s place again with the preamp, a tube mic, and a splitter cable. All Dan Alexander’s have original transformers, the ones with real Neve 1272 boards had the front panel jacks stacked one on top of the other and a PSU that looked like my kid made it. These were available as both mono and 2 ch units and the Chassis was deeper. The later “Class A Preamp” Like yours and my 4 are 2 ch units with Dans reproduction boards real old Neve transformers. You can tell these by the fact that each ch front 1/4 are side by side and the large Harmon Kardon / NEC 24volt AC PSU. My darker almost black face place unit is I believe a later unit, since the early ones are the same color as yours and has old Mariner Transformers like yours. The original ones with the stacked jacks, used real modified 1272’s just like the original BAE, Mercenary and others, but there is a finite number of real 1272’s out there and you still need 1272’s to keep your old console running so the real boards became to expensive, so like BAE Dan reverse engineered the board. The Transformers were contrary to legend an off the shelf Mariner part not engineered by Neve so there are far more transformers out there than Neve modules, so if you new what other products used these transformers or found a bunch of spares somewhere it wasn’t that expensive to canabalize or find them up to about 10 years ago. I have seen a couple of the original units that seam to have been serviced with later boards but they are very much the exception. The original 1272 equipped units seam to always be offered at higher prices, but I have had them side by side and nobody could hear a difference, however the assembly and PSU on these units have a deserved reputation for being buggy while the Recreation units are far more reliable, who ever Dan had building the later units was a better tech! It’s funny that people will still pay more for the words Neve on a PCB, even if most of the parts on that board have probably been replaced because the guy who repackaged it shouldn’t have ! So there you have all I have learned since buying my first Dan Alxender “Dual Class A Microphone Preamp” in a Houston Pawn Shop 18 years ago next month, in fact it was my Father’s Day present from my dogs, they had very good taste. The PSU for my first was missing and there is no indication that that it requires 24v AC on the unit rather than the 24 volts DC the modules actually use. After an unhelpful call to Dan, I discovered through on line photos and conversations with other owners the Harmon / NEC OEM line lump and that it deliverd 24v AC and approx 1.5 amps, well couldn’t find one, but at an Electronics surplus store South of Houston I found a bunch of Generic 24v AC 16amp line lumps and bought 5 for less than that Dan quoted me after a bunch of phone calls for 1 ! Guess which way I went ? Hint the generic ones also have 2 nice flanges for screwing them to a surface or zip tying them to a rear rack rail ! That started the adventure that would lead to a total of 4, to ch units and a custom rack mount PSU and this very important revolation; You don’t need 8 channels of good Neve pre to make a great sounding recording, but it sure as hell doesn’t hurt either😎

I’m going to be leaning on that DA for a while and using my Unison UAD 1073 as well. Although, I do love my Tab Funkenwerk V78M for certain things and my Demeter VTMP-2B has a way of making my cheap mics sound better than they are.

I ONLY have a beard to cover the double chin. I’m working out every day and I’m gonna lose the weight. Once it’s off, the beard goes! Plus I could never grow one that manly.

I woke up this morning and decided, “I want a Zod ID DI”. Turned out there was one left in the current batch. I’m all giddy with excitement. Thanks synchronicity and also Dan!
And also also... man I must be a couple months late on this report... Kcat, if you’re still listening, you had asked for my thoughts on the hardware Clariphonic. I’ve A/B’d it now with the plugin and while the plugin is fantastic and captures the essence of box, there is that certain je-ne-sais-quoi about the hardware unit that really wows me with the subtle boosts in the high end. There’s a definite realistic 3D quality to the air and sheen that the hardware provides which is only alluded to in the software. I have it parked on the mix bus doing some subtle sweetening. The M/S capabilities are really cool too: being able convert other outboard gear and use them as M/S processors.

Just scored a pretty good deal on an older AKG 414EB. I had a pair of b-ULS for years and I've been missing them. I've heard some really nice tracks done with EBs. We'll see!
