Okay kind of funny story: So I decided to build a point to point LA2a or 2. Ordered some parts and spent 2 days digging through boxes in storage looking for the Hakko 888, found the desoldering gun, but no luck. I’m sitting in the living room beat to hell sharing my frustration with my wife who then reminds me “ Don’t you remember, with the move you gave it to that kid in a wheelchair who was learning to solder along with that old de- soldering gun.” Soooo I ordered a new one from Hakko USA, best price out there & they got it shipped today! Please keep us posted on your LA2a! Which transformers / opto cell are you planning to use? Very cool project! I’ve been doing something similar with La3a…just too distracted with things at the moment to keep up regular progress. Good luck with it! Definitely Kenetek for the opto, Sowter or maybe AMI transformers, I just haven’t found anyone who has compared both, Sowter is a safe choice. Power by Hammond!

Honestly it’s a pretty simple build, I really like the idea of the AMI transformers, but the feedback on the Sowters from those who’s ears I trust ( of course yours included) are just to damn positive to even consider the AMI’s that load wise are a more accurate reproduction, but I have never heard a historically accurate load so I’m thinking Sowter! Of Course once it starts come together a quick shout out to Bowie will be in order for the best tube choices! I looked at Edcor who I am usually a huge fan of but the Sowters seam to be the top pick. I know Stam uses a combination of Sowter and Cinemag, also UTC’s are as much as a Stam la2! I’m feeling board very little work so this seamed like a good idea. It was that or bite the bullet and go all in on a big Aprilia 🥸

Now now step back for a second and remember I have millions in insurance claims already, while yes we both know for the most part KTM & Aprilia fly below the radar, I can’t swing the insurance, well that and there isn’t really much left for graft if I wipe😜 bottom of one foot, scrotum and belt line! Yeah don’t you just hate it when logic shows up to spoil the fun?

I picked up a Neumann Km54 today. Pretty much unused, in mint condition. I compared it to my reskinned KM56 and it sounded glorious. Such a beautiful sounding microphone!

Behringer X Touch digging it cheers Wiz I got the x1, I assign stereo channels or buss's to the single for writing automation, otherwise i usually only ride a single channel per pass, curious which model did you go for?

Picked up a Dr Z Convertible 2x12”. One of the few 2x12” that’ll fit in the “amp cubbies”
My thought, since we have two cubbies, is to have it and my other 2x12” filled with different speakers and mic’d up. Trying to get the studio set up “plug it in and go” instead of “here’s a pile of amps that we could use but I need 10 minutes to rig it up” mode. Might look into something like a Little Labs PCP to make it even easier
Also, I'm wasting so much of my life waiting for Pro Tools to offline bounce files I pre-ordered a Mac Mini M4 Pro. I can't take working on this laptop anymore, it wasn't purchased for what I'm using it for and it can't handle my honestly not that heavy of demands. And it only has a 256GB hard drive which after installing Pro Tools and plug-ins I'm left with about 2 GB of storage. It's been a bit of a nightmare lately and I'll be happy when it's over. Will Pro Tools play nice with the M4 right away? Probably not. But here's hoping

Let go of a few things and picked up a pair of Soyuz 013 with all the capsules and a Chandler Zener Limiter. I’ve been eyeballing the 013s. What are your first impressions? Pretty happy with the Soyuz so far! Use them on piano and they sounded wonderful, and did an upright bass overdub and pull one over to use as a top mic and worked really well, just like a KM84 would. Also, I recently grabbed a Audimute Isole “barrier sheet” to cover a window at my home space and was pretty impressed with how well it worked so I got another one to hand over the accordion style door in that room that has the water heater…I think it’ll do a nice job of “sealing” the opening

I’m not Wiz, obviously, but I use an X-Touch extender (8 faders) every day to control my Metric Halo Console app. Have used it for several years now. I just use it as my “listen back” mixer, essentially. It’s been great. Perfectly follows the first 8 faders in my MH Console.

Picked this vintage unit up; How expensive could one new hobby be? Should have plenty of funds available for new gear purchases, right?

I'm in Arizona, which is not known for it's sailing, so we flew to Salt Lake City to buy it, towed it 379 miles South to Lake Powell and had our first overnight voyage. Going back up in a couple of weeks to start fitting her out.

Going back up in a couple of weeks to start fitting her out. How lovely she looks. Sadly I get sea sick standing in my bath! My wife is from New Zealand and spent her summer holidays as a youth sailing around the Bay of Islands in a 32ft yacht.
