Refining my opto compressors:
Bought a JLM MAC 19” opto (stereo LA500’s). I’m gonna sell my 500-series unit.
Also got an Audioscape V3A on the way. I spent a long time deciding which style of opto I wanted in stereo, and decided the JLM was more universal.

Unfortunately the Mono Gama was DOA, usually I'd just get a replacement but I've got a couple of days coming up and my house is in utter disarray whilst I'm re-doing my studio. Whilst I have some time the plan is to finish it all off this weekend. (I'm like 70% there already)..
So, SH is going back and I've asked KMR to send me a Chandler TG2-500. I'm a sucker for I/O transformer amps, the only issue with this going by the Opto is I'll probably want their channel strip as well.

Never tried the 500 version though....

Our studio manager pulled a power-move and got a pair of Vacuvox u23m as well as the V41 dual channel preamp. Pretty stunning sounds on both after a few days of experimenting.
They have an incredible sense of depth and polish the upper mids in a beautiful way. Cymbals, guitars and vocals sound more vivid and lively without harshness.
The compression envelope is so musical, going between flowing glue with longer releases to urgency and excitement with faster release - the fast attack brings everything in a mix together while the slower times push drums up front without sounding unnatural.
It can bring a lot of impact with higher ratios or do smooth leveling at 1.5:1. Even at silly GR like 8dB things don't turm into mush. Ours has the original fixed 6kHz side chain boost de-esser which is very smooth and works well in tandem with the Maselec HF limiter to keep bright masters nice amd comfy.
Depending on the gain and input pad settings the lows can get BIG without feeling out of balance.
Using the V41 to get obvious saturation sounds really cool on line-level source too.

Finally got my USA Lakland 5594 DLX bass guitar. Oh that neck is to die for when playing it. I feel embarrassed I that my bass chops are no where near the quality of the instrument. What a beauty, 1.5 by BEANAT19, on Flickr 1.4 by BEANAT19, on Flickr

Yamaha E1010 cheap because it didn’t pass signal…replaced the tantalum’s and recapped the power supply while I was at it but unfortunately only the shortest setting works. Which either means the other M3005 are dead but hoping it’s something else (and cheaper)
Also this funky Old Blood Noise MAW vocal effect pedal. Might be fun. Might end up on Reverb 😆

Evidence Audio “The Forte” XLR cable purchased and quickly shipped from geistnote.com
Purchased to compare with my recently purchased Gotham GAC 4/1 11001 Turkish manufactured cable advertised as “the most advanced microphone cable presently available.”
Playing my Haynes flute into my SAMAR MG20, I strongly prefer the full sound of the Evidence cable over the Gotham in my opinion.

Evidence Audio “The Forte” XLR cable purchased and quickly shipped from geistnote.com Post some clips! For fear of being termed a “JANITOR a’ la GearSpace,” I politely decline. I have good equipment in my home to practice and listen to myself to prepare for engagements where recording engineers record me. I never touch their microphones and cables around me, nor set any of my instrument stands on their cables. Amen

Yamaha E1010 cheap because it didn’t pass signal… The 1010's are awesome. I don't really end up using mine much anymore, but man, those things are cool. Reminds me that I need to break it out and use it soon!

I just acquired a new Serrano 87. Trying it on my vocals and I like the results a lot. For the price, it’s an excellent value. Still in the honeymoon phase, but I think it works better for me than the RMS 269 it replaced (both running through an Aurora GTQC Rev 10). I ordered mine at the presale price a few months ago, but even at Serrano’s regular price, the mic is a steal. A little bit smoother, more balanced sound than the 87ai I have tried. Looking forward to checking it out on acoustic guitar and other sources!

Orange AD30TC 2x12”. Would have preferred a head because this thing is heavy but always liked these amps…probably the third one I’ve owned

Haven’t been buying recording gear lately. But, I have purchased an Allen & Heath CQ 20-B 16 channel digital mixer, a pair of Yamaha DZR 10s, and a pair of K&M loudspeaker stands to have a very nice, buy once, cry once rig for solo, duo, and open mic hosting. It’s an entirely different rabbit hole.

After about a decade of lusting after one, I picked up a Retro Sta-Level last week. Even with the multiple price increases since originally wanting one, I still think it’s worth every penny. I’ve had a pair of Doublewides for years and really love what they do, but wow, this thing is on another level! I’ve never experienced that much gain reduction sounding so good. Things just keep getting thicker the harder you push it. I kept cranking the input thinking, “surely it’s gonna fold”, but it just keeps sounding good!

Picked up a used Speck viaFader +Mix to have the panning and some lights, ha. Not using the summing and wish the solo applied to the in/out busses, but nice to have panning.
Also got in a LinnStrument 128. I have no idea how useful it will be but we'll see in a week or so.
