Well it's been a speedy month . . . beside finally committing to the LH95, also got me an A M A Z I N G not one but TWO new microphones. cdkelly 's Singal ARTS 48 which is everything a 48 should be And a Vanguard V44S mark 2. So many incredible mics that 118 doesn't seem like enough. Ward, Can you please file a report on the V44S? I've been super curious about that one for quite some time and am continually tempted by it. What is the top end like? EDIT: Sorry, Ward; I just saw your other post wherein you're describing it; thanks for that! Thanks! -09

Ordered an Audient Sono from B&H for $199. Wasn't in the market for a USB interface, but been playing a Synergy preamp direct into a headphone amp on the couch and read about the Sono's ability to run Two Notes IRs in stand-alone mode. Has a tube coupled direct in, amp tone stack and three slots for storing IRs that run on it's DSP, could be a cool backend for the Synergy preamp modules.
Also got an offer for half off on UVI's Vintage Vault 4 and picked it up for $129, I've been leaning in on programming keys sounds for some recent productions.

Neumann U67RE.
Will possibly trade it, and I'm testing it right now in my studio. So far, well... It's very bright so no vintage smoothness here I'm afraid. Quite sibilant too. But if I keep it I'll go down the rabbit hole and try out some different tubes.

Today a 20" Istanbul Agop XIST crash arrived. It's bittersweet because it is to replace my favorite cymbal ever, which has developed a crack.

I know that publically you have stated a preference for RME mic pres but they can be unflattering on bright mics. Sometimes a Neve style pre can bring just the mojo they miss.

We thought it was pretty dark -- not very glamorous sounding.

They sound darker, than many other LDC's today. Love 'em for that! A good 67 style ought to sound like there's a bit of DeEssing going on. Chris

This one sounded like there was a high-freq shelf rolling off at 1K.

This one sounded like there was a high-freq shelf rolling off at 1K. I had a demo of one at my studio when it first dropped. Definitely didn’t think it was a bright sounding mic. If that mic was bright, I can’t imagine how dark a vintage one would sound.

Nah, I do usually prefer cleaner preamps or atleast that doesn't color like a Neve preamp, but the RME are just ok. I had a crane song spider which I really liked. I do think that the U67Reissue sounded better with the Neve 1272 then the GAP 73dlx though. I'll go down the rabbit hole and try out different tubes if I keep it. I talked to Fehrer and he said the tube that is installed now is one of the brightest there is so that gives me some hope! It doesn't sound much like a vintage that's for sure though!

We thought it was pretty dark -- not very glamorous sounding. This one is certainly not dark. My u87 vintage I just picked up sounds just rigt in that vintage way. I mean I don't mind a brighter U67 then a vintage because I always thought they where to smooth in the midrange. My main concern is that it's quite sibilant. Not baked into the signal like a good vintage mic usually tackles sibilance.

If that mic was bright, I can’t imagine how dark a vintage one would sound. I hate to use the term, but the one we tested was dulls-ville -- and there were four of us listening to it compared to other mics; some home-brewed, some commercial...but all of them were in the Neumann-esque family. We were only comparing it on vocals.
As you can imagine, the owner was quite disappointed. Maybe there was something wrong with it, but at that price...

As to Neumann U67ri mics - I believe there were some where the capsules had some issues. I believe Neumann fixed this. I bought a couple at the end of 2021, and they are just fine. I like my Heiserman 47t better on my baritone-ish voice. But they are certainly great mics. I also changed out the stock tubes for telfunken ef806s tubes.
If someone has one and is not happy with it, one option is to send it to Klaus to check/improve the mic.

That's a good idea re: Klaus-ification
I've gotta say, though, that I'd expect ANY Neumann mic -- not just the $7.5K ones -- to have passed a QC check to ensure the frequency response was correct.
...but especially the $7.5K ones!

By the way, I did receive a pair of Lewitt MTP 550 DM mics. Thank you plinker. Wow - what great mics and at a great price. And built really well from what I can tell. I think Lewitt may be a good company to keep on the radar.
