Today the STAM Audio 47 that I ordered under the SA76 ADx delay program discount arrived at last. I finished paying for it in October and today it appeared. Weighing about 20 lbs. With the power supply and mic it’s a heavy case. It comes with a decent shock mount and a long cable, which is nice. ibb.co/3dYjysKI thought I’d do a mic comparison because I never have. I got a Karaoke track of “Fly Me To The Moon” and sung two verses, first on an AKG 414EB from the ’70’s, then the STAM 47, then the Chandler REDD. Three short .wav files are here: www.dropbox.com/sh/af15ttleboxa9m6/AAC84d974PA1RZdVtXWtMt7ra?dl=0I claim no prowess or facility with this style of music, but it was a 47, so I thought it appropriate. All mics are dry with no processing of any kind. There’s three different performances, and the balances are by ear (set with the track louder, then dimming the track level,), so just listen to the sound of the mics, not the levels. All were recorded through a Metric Halo ULN-8, the Chandler Line In, the other two with MH’s mic pres, which are pretty clean. I must say, stepping up to the 47 and singing into it, I felt kinda special. I’m happy with it, I think it sounds great. The Chandler was set to normal, about ⅔ max output. All three mics were on cardioid. I’m happy I have two really nice tube mics now. I’m wondering if the 414 needs refurbing. With the STAM discount, the SA-47 was a bargain. I still haven’t gotten the Stam 76 yet! awesome. THey sound great. The 47 does sound very good.

I received my Proreplicas 1176 Rev G mod to silverface Rev H. What an awsome piece of compressor! Pushing vocals at -20db and sounds nothing but great. It's almost imposible to make it sound bad no matter what settings you use on it. I like it more for vocals than my Rev A blue stripe , (for pop vocals) Very happy with my new toy lmnpryect, why do you prefer the ProReplicas Rev G to Rev A for pop vocals? I just ordered a ProReplicas Rev A for my vocals.

My label was generated Dec. 12th but no further action has shown up on it. Your clip is encouraging, the REDD sounds closer to the 414 than the 47, and if there's a mic I'm familiar with cutting vocals on, it's the 414.

hadaja yes it is! I have a Metabones Speedbooster which allows EF to Micro Four Thirds, crop factor of 1.42 for EF lenses. Also gives you an extra stop or so of aperture. Ward I can tell you about the dehumidifier just don't ask about the mess, haha. I'll be ready for spring cleaing.

donrThe Stam sounds really, really good. Certainly as good as any other 47 clone I've heard. It also provides a very nice contrast to the REDD, which is of course excellent. I'm jealous!

donr I don't know if this is a shootout or not, but I thought the REDD sounded pretty special on your voice. Of course, all three mics sounded great. I also suck at crooning but my brother has a natural aptitude for it. I think it requires volume, and bass tones in the voice, if I had to guess.

Another vote for the REDD mic. I don't think this was very close, donr. The REDD was head and shoulders above the Stam and the old EB. Clarity, lack of mud, lack of sibilance. Absolutely beautiful!

I like it more for vocals than my Rev A blue stripe , (for pop vocals) Very happy with my new toy lmnpryect, why do you prefer the ProReplicas Rev G to Rev A for pop vocals? I just ordered a ProReplicas Rev A for my vocals. Rev A sounds great , but for cleaner , softer, delicated pop / folk , vocals , for tracking, i think that Rev G/H is more versatile because is the most transparent/cleaner sound of all the 1176 revisions (less harmonic distortion , and less low mids boost / "body" ussually called by people) So with the rev G/H i can add later harmonic distortion or low mids with my rev A or plugins (used gently at -2db max) but on the contrary i cannot take away harmonic distortion in a compressed track with a Rev A. For pop-rock vocals Rev A its the one, it really shines! With the Rev A i can hear a little harmonic sparkle in the high mids and highs that are not present with the Rev H. My idea is to track with Rev H and then limit the vocal take later with rev H or Rev A at 8:1 ratio -2db I think most people love Rev A because it adds much more color , character , body to the sound , that is great in a lot of sources. From what i read, Proreplicas is known to build one of the bests Rev A on the market , and Robert (Proreplicas) is very helpfull , he answered hundreds of questions i ask to build my 1176 the way i wanted and he kept in touch in all the process. His pultecs clones EQ are great too If you want , you can send me a vocal file and i can compress with both compressors , so you can choose what you like most

subspace, I got the same shipping label on Dec 12. I thought Santa was coming. By New Years, I realized I hadn't gotten any action on the shipment, I emailed Stam on Jan. 3, on the 4 they said it was shipped. It took 4 days to get here from Chile via FedEx.
I don't think I got any special treatment, they probably don't know I'm a classic rock guy, or if that would make any difference.

For that song/key... STAM 47 1st. REDD. 2nd 414eb 3rd. Chris P.S. See now you've gotta do your "Standards" album! (Cue Tony Bennett's "Wonderwall")

Just ordered a modded Ashly clx-52 from a guy on Reverb who upgraded the VCA’s, op amps, and all the caps. Not sure if or what it will do to make it better, but the price was right, and I was curious. My very first piece of outboard was an old Ashly cl52 that someone lent me back in the early 2000’s. I always missed it, so I’m hoping this brings back some of what I remember about the old one. Transparent, clean compression, with just a dab of analog mojo.

I've never played these vintage Guilds, but have been very interested in checking them out. I like the idea of owning a top quality, locally made, vintage guitar. I'll keep my eyes peeled on craigslist try and score a deal. Thanks for the tip. Yeah give them a try. I've been wanting one for awhile. Look at reviews online. Hard to find a bad one for the D35's. Such well built, great sounding guitars. Recommended highly! Yeah. I have a '64 D40. Amazing guitar. Probably as good as my '59 J-200 but different.

Yeah. I have a '64 D40. Amazing guitar. Probably as good as my '59 J-200 but different. I had a chance to buy a 1964 Gibson J-200 18 x years ago. That was the most beautifulest sounding guitar ever. But i valued my marriage more.

Choosing the wife I had 18 years ago over that guitar would've been a regrettable mistake... Though I suppose she would've ended up with the guitar anyway so...

Made a move towards Mytek and acquired a Brooklyn ADC converter. For 384kHz. and DSD recordings. Already run Prism and DAD converters here for regular speed recordings.

Ever since I picked up the Demo Brooklyn DAC+ I have been lusting over the AD ! The only thing that has kept me from it is the total lack of tracking work! But no you had to re lite that itch 😎

Well, it's not audio, but I recently picked up a faceting machine/flat lap and a mini table saw that I'm converting to be used wet as a trim saw - I'm getting back into cutting opal during the lockdown. Should have done it months ago.
Maybe I'll even make a little money - prices on opal have gone up considerably in the past 30 or so years...
Turns out that the Chinese are now selling some quite reasonably priced cutting tools....
