I sucked it up and bought a Mac Mini. I’m doing a remote session next week and my 2014 i5 Mac Mini has been driving me crazy and I just don’t trust it. Did the 3.2GHz i7, and I bought a 64GB RAM kit from OWC. Overkill on the RAM but I’m only want to buy it once!

Just pulled the trigger on UAD Ultimate 8. I bought a quad PCIe card off a friend who was getting out of audio, with about 34 plugins attached to it. A couple free bundles with a satellite octo and an apollo twin. Made the outstanding cost of the Ultimate 8 bundle $849 for the 38 plugins I didnt have; which puts each plug at $22 (distressor, 2500, all lexicons, capitol chambers, all channel strips... hard to say no)!

Ordered a Standard Audio Stretch. They're on back order, so have to wait a few weeks. I guess I haven't "acquired" it. ha.

That ART compressor looks pretty cool. I grabbed one of these UREI DI boxes recently. I didn't really need another DI but it sounds pretty good.

ART Trans-Y? Like the ART version of a transient designer and FET limiter in one?

At the suggestion of a buddy who's tracking sounds amazing I finally caved and picked up 8 ASC Tube Traps a few weeks back while they were on sale. Really didn't want to spend the money but so far they seem to be really helping in the 2 rooms I do the most recording in, taking out the weird room repair work that was usually the first step after tracking. Not as fun as the Sta I sold that ended up partially funding them but more useful in the long run.

Bock u195. Always wanted to try one of these. Now i can tick it off the G.S. Bucket list. The transformer in that thing is huge. I am not sure what application you would use the fat switch on? I think i heard somewhere you turn fat on and low cut on . Will have to try that. Not too sure why people thought it was a u87 killer. It has its own thing going on. I will have to find a nice shock mount for it to live in. Anyone else still using there 195? What did you find it excelled on?

I bought 10 of them back in January and it was easily one of the best audio-related purchases I've ever made. The sonic improvement can seem a little subtle at first, but once your ears adjust, you won't be able to "unhear" it.

Bought an API 8 slot 500 chassis. They finally got me. I'm so ashamed.

A Marantz cassette deck with USB output. I happily said goodbye to anything with a pinch roller many years ago. But in the course of downsizing, my wife found a huge box of cassettes. Most of them are air checks from her days in radio back in the 80s and a few were demo tapes from producers and record reps she knew. She'd carefully stored the old AIWA deck, but the thing refused to come out of hibernation. So I bought her the Marantz (not many choices any more). What a strange feeling that is.

I would be interested in something like this. I was just sent a bunch of band tapes from an old band I played in that need going through.

The sonic improvement can seem a little subtle at first, but once your ears adjust, you won't be able to "unhear" it. I definitely agree with you on that. Nice to let go of the subconscious stress I didn't realize was there when cutting acoustic instruments, drums, and vocals. Also digging being able to back the mics off cabs a bit as well as positioning them to help with monitoring. Way more fun and better results than working without them in this room.

Ok, in the proper thread this time haha
I just picked up a Bettermaker Mastering Limiter I have yet to set up! Anyone have any favorite applications besides the standard use in a mastering chain (which is where I'll normally be using it). I think it might be cool on certain drum buses and maybe even guitar buses while mixing, largely thanks to the really surgical saturation section.

As some of you may know, I was fortunate enough to win it a few years ago. At the Bock Booth NAMM drawing. Great mic. Please keep in mind though, I'm primarily "only" a singer. FWIW earlier that day at NAMM, I was choosing between my two "under $1200" vocal microphones-the other was the MG M930 BTW... for my (self/May) Birthday present. Before the drawing, I was edging towards the U195. (helped ease my $1000 total car smog repair bill-a few months later!) Post-Pandemic, it'll be my "bring to the Pro Commercial Studio" vocal mic. It has a wide cardiod pattern, so it shines best in a genuinely good (or better) sounding room. As my very brief vocal clip below indicates... The U195 has a very full/present tone, when set on flat. A few years ago, when my voice was somewhat brighter than now, the darker FAT setting was better on it. Nice to have that flexibility. I had a Pre-Pandemic Cold, when I recorded the original clip here BTW. So it got heavily cut to just this. Chris P.S. My sense is that the tone on FLAT... Is remarkably similar to a properly Processed/EQ'd U87ai, on my voice. "Flatten" the upper mid U87ai "bite", open up some "air" around 12KHz. But that's already done with the U195.

Grabbed a few things these last couple of weeks. Upgraded my Waves SSL plugs so I had the same plugins as my orchestrator. He’s been sending me sessions with some of his usual mix treatment already there. This is particularly helpful on drums which he is much better at mixing than I am. Picked up CLA Effects, as it has a preferred setting for the Sax player who’s coming by on Wed to record a featured part on one of our tracks for the Christmas Album. Lastly, I nabbed Swing! I had picked up Swing More! last year which is amazing for big band style music and am happy to have the full package now. I also bought Swing More! for my orchestrator.

I've had to expand some gear on the video/film side recently. Kind of a bummer to have to spend $ there, but that side of audio life actually still has income associated with it.
Picked up another RØDE WirelessGo (man, these things are deceptively good and useful), several brackets and adapters, a RØDE VideoMicNTG (not the greatest sounding thing in the world, but one of the best on-camera mics I've heard, and crazy clever and useful design), and a Blackmagic ATEM Mini Pro HDMI switcher/recorder.
All of this, combined with my EOS-R and video lighting, has allowed me to take my livestreaming with clients up to a ridiculously high level. I'm really pleased.
