I put together a little analog tape goodness for another option. This is not a large-format goo machine, I get it, but it sounds really great and the transport functions on this one are very good.

I got 4 more Beyerdynamic MPC 67 boundary mics because they were so cheap and I love these things. I think 14 boundary mics should be enough now LOL.

Got myself a piece of old technology today: a beautiful Lynx Aurora 8. First few tests and I'm in love. A/D sounds wonderful compared to my Apollo.

I met Ward at Vanguard Audio Labs on Monday and we met Derek. A well organized operation. Well this is what I picked up today. I am really curious about these. What are your thoughts so far? EDIT: Me being the flaming idiot that I am, I didn't realize I'd already asked this Q a few posts back. DOH. -09

I got 4 more Beyerdynamic MPC 67 boundary mics because they were so cheap and I love these things. I think 14 boundary mics should be enough now LOL. Do these make good room mics? Very! They are sort of a hybrid between room/close mics if you know what I mean. They are always going to sound "a little roomy" when you place them close to an instrument, so that's just part of the sound. On a typical trap set application they are going to sound just a little bit grindy or crunchy for some reason, don't know why, a little bit of attitude. I did an ambient improv track and it suited this style perfectly. I capture three instruments with only a pair of these microphones. There were three small combo amps set up. I posted this video in the "What Are You Working On" sub forum if you want to have a listen. Crab Power - Lost In The Game is the name of the track. I also have some Audio Technica U851/O half omni boundary mics here that are a bit more on the brighter side, but I haven't thoroughly put them to use just yet. They do make good room mics though. The MPC67 are more suited to close up recording. The AT's need to be a bit far from things IMO because they are already a bit trebly. Unless you want that sparkle on something like an acoustic guitar maybe.

Just arrived:
Shure SM7B minty fresh + waterproof case Zoom H1n handy recorder and accessories Rode VideoMic NTG (the new one that just came out).
having a lot of fun with this stuff right now. All completely external from Cubase at the moment.
I will say the Zoom doesn't sound as good as my Sound Devices MixPre 6 but it will surprise how decent it does sound.
NTG is a lot of fun. SM7B is an old friend that was gone from me for 5 years.

How do you rate the (ZenPro) TAB Funkenwerk Shure 57/58... Nowadays? Really SM7-ish? Thanks, Chris

In my most recent shootout I preferred the stock SM57 over any of my modded SM57s (TAB, Crimson Yellow) or the 545SDs.
I'll have to compare these again with the SM7B and the PR35 which is my #1 favorite handheld for my voice. PR35 usually wins the shootouts. SM7B is so good though it will be interesting to see.
EDIT: quick shootout. SM7B is just so perfectly balanced. PR35 has that big chest tone, mega info in the sub range, and a pointy nose on the top mids, very colored sound, but it's flattering. PR35 needs a 160 Hz high pass at the very least to be usable. MixPre does that for me. In the DAW I usually go up to 200 Hz.
SM7B you just pull the fader up. I like the rear switchies to both be on.
Guess I am going to have to start tracking with the SM7B again. I'm planning a live jam/session for probably Friday or Saturday to put these to the test.

This has been a fulfilling moment for me in an otherwise sucky day HAHAHAHa

Well now you're just missing out on that earthy tone from the classic under rock splice!

Hey tkaitkai! Inspired by some of our recent conversion conversations, I got a Burl AD on order. Very curious to see if I prefer it to my x8 converters, which I find to be very capable, if a bit on the clinical side. Got myself a piece of old technology today: a beautiful Lynx Aurora 8. First few tests and I'm in love. A/D sounds wonderful compared to my Apollo. View Attachment

I’ve heard nothing but great things about the X series Apollos (UA seem to have taken things up a notch) — it’ll be really interesting to see how it holds up against the Burl. In my case, I’m using the original silver Apollo Twin, and there’s really no contest with the Lynx. Not night and day, but enough to make me keep the Aurora.

Picked up Eventide Spring as I find myself gravitating to Eventide verbs ITB for vibe. Bought at pluginboutique to get the 2 AAS sound packs freebie to use in VA-3. I like the full NKS Komplete Kontrol mapping/browsing using their stuff, so much so I logged in with another e-mail and bought AIR Vacuum Vintage for $5 just to get another couple sound packs.
