the black gloves thing is kind of cheesy but that's a cool mic for sure Rhodium is what makes white gold white and has to be re-plated because it wears off. The gloves will keep the wear to a minimum. Gotcha. Not the mic for me! But it "looks cool" for sure.

Gloves are also handy also for starting duel'n banjos and/or pianos. Actually I think it's pretty cool... Chris

I cleaned up all the oxidation and pitting on the metal, threw in two fresh 9 volts, a set of 11's and wham, what a nice guitar. It is a 1982 Westone Thunder 3 and thanks in equal measure to the neck through design and hot pickups, this girl can sing and play. The first five frets are overworn and need be swapped out, the fugly non-original knobs replaced and perhaps I'll bring on new switches and of course clean up the pots. She sustains for days and has with the active eq and gain about 38dB of boost (hence the two 9 volts). Running without all that she also sounds great in passive mode, all that juicejyst puts her over the top when driving hard an amp and cabinet. For the couple of hundred buck I bought it for and a couple hundred more, I have another great electric guitfiddle. Body - Canadian Ash, Hard Maple and Walnut Neck - through neck, Hard Maple and Walnut 5 piece laminate Ebony fingerboard, brass nut. 25.5 inch scale, 24 frets Steel tailpiece and bridge with brass saddles Metal backplates (Presumably like those on the Thunder II and III basses - anodised aluminium, not brass) 2 Magnet-F530G pickups Controls - Master volume, tone, equalizer volume: coil tap, phase and active EQ switches, 3 way pickup selector Active EQ is + or - 25 db with a centre zero position, gain is adjustable up to 13db. Available in Walnut and Sunset Red Optionally available with an XLR connector instead of the more usual jack socket. Script logo on headstock

I love those old neck through Japanese guitars. Wish I had one that was in good enough shape to play. The Memphis MG300 I loved just had too many problems. I think Burzum's main guitar was a Westone back in the '90s. Not music for everyone, but great music.

I got a Crimson Yellow SM57 "mod" from Front End Audio. I bought the handle and I just noticed there is an option to add a 57 cartridge for an extra $60 or so, I did that.
It ends up being a pretty good deal for a brand new / modded SM57.
It sounds quite good on vocals in my scratch demo, better than other 57s. Not sure if it wins on guitar amp yet, it seems pretty bright. I guess I'll have to try it on snare too.

Just picked up a Behringer, Er Klark Teknik 2a. Never owned a 2a style before.
What do do people think about the output on these. Is pushing it a good idea generally. Will experiment of course.
what about tube rolling? Not sure what it ships with.
anywho my first bit of new gear in many years.
Cheers , Geoff

Cheers , Geoff It’s fairly clean, but definitely has that gentle opto compression action. Kind of reminds me of the ADL version, although it’s been a few years. I’ve gotten a nice amount of color on vocals using it followed by a distressor or kt76, even on cleaner settings the distressor seems to bring out more character from the KT2A.

Not sure if it wins on guitar amp yet, it seems pretty bright. I guess I'll have to try it on snare too. I just did a long vocal mic shootout. The winners are actually the PR35 and the STOCK SM57 for my voice. The Heil PR35 needs about a 200 Hz High Pass though in the box it's just wayyyy too bassy without a high pass. Once you do that you're golden. The built in high pass inside the mic makes it sound broken, and I don't recommend using it. It gets honky and super thin. The stock SM57 is a very familiar vocal sound. The TAB mod is a little darker, and the Crimson Yellow is quite a bit brighter to the point of a bit of sibilance. The Crimson Yellow almost sounds like it has an Exciter or a treble booster on it, it's a hyped up sound that might work in some tracks. Just as a bare vocal, though, it's hard to beat the classic SM57 bone stock and proud as the day it came. The SE V7 is "good" also but for my voice it's a bit too subdued, it sounds a little more laid back than the others. I'm sure other singers would work on it. The TAB 57 shows merit as a relaxed, hi fi sound but it's just a tiny bit "boring" this may change with mix moves though. The Crimson Yellow 57 is really zippy and sharp on guitar amps, it's not going to be a regular reach for me on guitar cabs. Rob Schnapf says to use it on snare drum, I'm going to try that next. It's just really odd to me to own a 57 that I don't want to use on a guitar amp. I asked about sending it back but Front End Audio said, "No."

Just got my Heiserman 47 Tube. Lucky #16 It is really something. The 'gack' is there and the 'gack' is clear. (and although I love it, I doubt anything comes close to winetree's museum quality #37 but this is as close as any of the rest of us will get!) Anyhow . . . holy stinking WOW

I wonder how the Soyuz Launcher would be, on your dynamics monkeyxx? Chris It would probably help with the brighter mics but work against the fatter mics. This is just a guess based on my perception of the Launcher. Of course every track/song/production is different. I mainly use my self-made 251 mic for vocals, but I keep a single handheld mic on the main desk for "grab and go" vocals. Sometimes the vibe is better with the handheld, so I wanted to see which ones were favored from my growing collection of handheld dynamic mics. It's just good to know, really.

I'd like to hear The Crimson Yellow on my snare drum Just tried it out. If you like a punchy/explosive snare drum this would be a good choice. It's not subtle. I am tempted to stick with the SE V7X for now. Sometimes the V7X sits back too much though. The Yellow 57 is much more forward and defined sounding. Sort of a yin/yang. I guess it's good to have that option now, suddenly. I am thinking for a harder/heavier track the yellow 57 would be very much welcome in the mix. I just did the track about 30 minutes ago so I'm still processing the information, this is an early impression. It's almost always hard to learn new gear in the first few days, sort of waiting to see where the chips fall. I guess what I will do is leave the yellow 57 set up and use it a few more times to see how it fares over the next couple of weeks. EDIT: I've been playing the track back and I'm pretty happy with the snare sound. Requires less EQ in the mix. Gets you there quicker I guess. Slightly bright mics always seem to work pretty well on snare, so this is good for that. And Rob S. approved, haha.

Updated a couple older VI's, AIR Loom II and AAS Ultra Analog VA-3, plus grabbed a deal for 12 AAS sound packs and 2 session instruments for $14. Added Eventide's H3000 Band Delays and Instant Flanger Mk II plug-ins. As far as non-virtual gear purchases, but still kinda virtual gear, ordered a Stam SA-47.

Traded a ride cymbal I didn’t care for much for a Zildjian Constantinople 18” crash. Definitely different from what I already own.
Otherwise just been scouring the Internet for possible new studios space because ours is getting turned into condos (story of Nashville)
Let’s just say $125,000 doesn’t get you a 2000 square foot house beer downtown like I did when we bought our home in 2012. Don’t even think it’ll get me an empty lot 😳

I’m in Germantown. Berry Hill has enough studios. I’ll probably end up in Madison or Old Hickory. Hendersonville has too much traffic.
There’s no shortage of places to work out of and I’ve got some good relationships to where it’s still cost effective for artist, but it be hard to not have my own space I can use on a whim.

I bumped into Mike Lamping at Blink Cincinnati and he was trying to sell his CD there that he said he recently worked with you on. Said he recorded it at "John Prine's studio." So that is being torn down? Or is this a different place?

An Optocomp from Audioscape was just ordered. Now I have the buss, the 76A, and the opto. Should be good on the compressors. Two nice on the front end and a nice mix buss.
