More tube mic pre's on the way. Looking for something QUITE different. Chose a pair of the Coil CA-70S's. Picked up a Soloman Mics Lo Freq SubMic. Should be cool. Caved in on the Vanguard V44S. It's backordered for a week or two though. The rotating capsules is what pushed me over the edge. I hope it sounds half as good as the hype! Look forward to putting it on OH along with the coils. Should rock. Still loving my v44s through the Silver Bullet. For me it was a happy surprise of a mic. Nice! I look forward to mine shipping out in a week or so. What are your favorite uses for the mic? Where does it excell?

I like mine on drums as a low-ish OH, 30-36" over snare, sometimes more over the kick or slightly in front. Have also had good luck on an old upright, as a room mic on guitar amps, and anywhere I feel like adding natural ambience. I'd thought I'd use it more on acoustic guitars but I can't help but gravitate towards the 84 for that, it is cool though a little further back as a room tone compliment. So yeah, thinking about it for me I guess it excels in situations where I want more ambience, or am too lazy to set up a pair of LDC's. With the Silver Bullet it's a dead simple setup that always delivers. I sold my old 451eb pair to a drummer I work with after getting it, they just didn't see much use when the v44s came into the picture.

Picked up a T-Rex Replicator Tape Echo on a good deal. Definitely a bit tweaky - and seems to prefer line level - but man this thing is lush. Is it the tape transport that's tweaky? I've been thinking of getting one of these as a poor man's Roland 501.

After reading raves about old EV mics on RGO I picked up a mint pair of EV PL6 on eBay when the seller dropped the price by $100. So far I've only tried them on toms--balanced, non-scooped, and retro sounding. First impressions are they're just what I hoped they would be, and they take eq well if desired.

Well I've been SLAMMED building capi gear for clients, playing shows trying to self book a tour leg or 2 across the US, and working part time at brewery in chicago.....so I've been busy......now with some extra funds the gas has caught me ripe with a bachelor/kidless budget so I've been upgrading things a bunch as of late with new toys. Some new additions.... -1968 "blackline" silverface pro reverb- well maintained original transformers- only mod to it before I bought it was that it had the rectifier tube changed to a solid state circuit- eliminating some of the sag/ adding some headroom. No skin off my back since I wanna record and gig with it-had some crummy eminence speakers in them more suited for organs so I upgraded the speakers to ted weber's 12f150's and now it really sings. Got lucky this one is still a blackface circuit being a 68 transition so it's got some mojo, recording wise it's almost there still need to break in the speakers! -1972 Neumann u87. Apparently this mic was owned by an old cat on music row ( Clark Williams) who did a lot of work in studios with Dale Morris, so its seen its fair share of talent including the carter sisters; had a snafu with it being checked out by Shannon @ mic rehab who ripped off the seller but that's another conversation entirely...original capsule, fails breath test close up, but with a pop screen and after keeping in a bag with some rechargeable silicone bags, it'll work for vocal work until the capsule eventually needs to be replaced once it hits that point of no return....sounds banging on FOK or as a single drum overhead too. -14" 1979 zildjian new beat hi-hat's
-22" Big beat Ride * was torn between this and a dark K but this came up on Bstock in reverb so I pulled the trigger I've had to talk myself down on ordering an audioscape SSL busscomp &/or the la2a lately before that baseline price increases- but I need to fill up my 11 space rack with 500 series pre's , comps, and eq's 1st lol.

Got another Shure 545SD.
Did a shootout, they are slightly different, who would have thought.

Old time AE's would go through these microphones... Mark them "amp"/"drum"/etc., according to their tone. Popular on the "Left Coast" USA for lead studio vocals too (L.A./Bay Area), in the 60's/70's. Chris

fingers crossed they work for mixing too. I use the Q701's for mixing pretty often. I had a friend with the 712's and did some extensive listening and comparing. I think that the 712's are a better phone, but for me, the 701's felt better. I have a tendency to push the highs and felt like the 701's would get a little more harsh in the top when I was pushing too hard, which caused me to back off. The 712's just stayed smooth.

thats kinda good news as im having the opposite issue currently where things are coming out a little dull. im hoping the 712's help resolve that.
ill get a pair of dt770 soonish as well.
i almost got the 701. a guy was selling them locally and i almost bought them but he wanted too much and i couldnt talk him down so was pretty happy to find a pair of 712's instead.

Audio Technica ATH-R70x. Looking forward to testing them out. Happy with my ATH-M50x, but hoping an open back might be a little less fatiguing and more linear for when I'm tracking in spaces where I don't trust the monitoring environment (weirdly often around here).

SO light. haha. I was kinda surprised. Def. more comfortable than the 50s, which, despite the quality sound, are a bit tight on my (apparently) giant head. They remind me of DT770s I had years back. Looking forward to putting them to the test.

I very rarely win giveaways and today I got notified I won a Sonnox Elite bundle. That was a nice surprise.
Don't have any of the Sonnox stuff so it'll be interesting to check them out.

Heritage Audio Successor. Ok... It just came in the mail today.
A few mins ago, I downloaded a 10-15 second clip of a drum pattern from the purple site (page 4 of the Successor announcement thread). I've been playing with this on multiple settings to get "the feel."
So far... I've had it up and running for maybe 15 mins, and I've never had so much fun with a stereo bus comp. REALLY has a lot of character. Something totally unique to me. I'm not talking about the 1073 output amplifier... Talking about the way it feels kind of "sticky" and "playful" in its compression. Hard to explain, because... I've never owned a comp that behaves exactly this way. (I have no direct experience with vintage diode bridge comps like the 33609 or 2254).
My other available stereo paired comps:
» Rupert Neve 535 x2 (these are also diode bridge based, but totally different sound) » Chandler TG Opto 500 x2 (optical) » IGS Audio Tubecore 3U ME (Vari Mu) » TK Audio BC2-ME (VCA)
Loving the Heritage Audio Successor. DEFINITELY a unique comp in the midst of the other 4 stereo-paired comps I already owned. They're all different, and I visualize them fitting sounds together like a jigsaw puzzle.
Chad
PS: I'll also find places to use this on mono sources during tracking/mixing. It's just too good to only use on a bus.

Got the Coils today. Very happy. Very thick, chunky and huge. Almost scared to put them on kick..... But on a personal level, I'm even happier with something I've wanted to do for years. With the help of a buddy last weekend, I filled a couple of alcoves in the entryway wall of the studio with barnwood and then hung up some of my guitars. A tele wall and a strat wall. Woohooooo!!!!! Very cheap. Found all the wood myself. Fun, and really cool IMO.
