I know this is somewhat xenophobic of me, but mics from the Eastern block scare the shit out of me. I think Flea mics are made in Slovakia. I meant sold from Russia on ebay

Just received my Barbaric Amplification BA-49. So far, on initial listen...the BA-49 is everything I’ve dreamed about. I can’t imagine getting any closer to the M49 sound for this amount of money. Big 👍 to Chris for making my dream a reality! I am super excited to get it in the fray. Chris does all point to point with turret board assembly. The mic is perfectly quiet, amazing depth and tone, zero harshness and super warm & cozy on my ears. Zero sibilant distortion here. Very impressed!!
Parts used:
CU-49 Body kit and Shock-mount
Accusound AT-7 cable w/ Binder ends
Thiersch STW7 with STS7a holder
Selected 5840W tube
AMI-TAB BV8R [6.5:1 ratio]
collective case PSU case
Hey Adam! Congrats!!!! Looks sweet. Can you mention the price? Or PM if necessary. Their website is pretty difficult to navigate.... A pair of M49's would make my day. Forget that - my year.

I'm stretching the thread title here a little as my E.Guitar isn't new but the refinish/paint job on it is newer to me.
This 1964 Fender Jazzmaster was found many years ago on the road in a Missouri Pawn shop with the original finish already taken off. I played it that way for years until finally getting around to restoring it with my brother in law to an original 60's Fender surf green color. I realize that while I didn't care for the previous wood finish the original owner had sanded it down to, that some would prefer it that way. But it just didn't work for me and I always liked Fender's surf green. Here's the Before and some after pics,
I’ve spent years dreaming about getting the walnut Elvis Costello style Jazzmaster. Yeah, more people may prefer the sanded down wood finish than the Fender color I chose. I would have preferred the original finish myself had it been left on, but by the time it came to me it had been sanded off. Now If it had been real walnut on the other hand I would have felt differently but the 1964 body is alder. Elvis Costello’s custom wood Jazzmaster from the late 70’s is probably what inspired the original owner of mine to sand it down I’d guess. I saw Elvis Costello many years ago (I liked his early stuff better than his later) and he sounded great

I think Flea mics are made in Slovakia. I meant sold from Russia on ebay Ah. Totally. You see good deals on gear all the time from sellers bases in the Russian Federation. I took a chance on a piece a few years ago and got burned. The seller misrepresented the piece and claimed it to be something it was not. I won PP dispute and got my money back, but I had to ship it back to Russia which was a total pain. My policy now is to generally stick with buying in the U.S. Definitely not from that area, though (I don’t mean to generalize, but it’s too much of a risk and pain to deal with if something goes wrong).

Sexy. I went around the room at VK with the $1200 headphones or whatever they have hooked up. Thought the Flea 249 might have been the best sounding mic in the room. Followed by the Flea 47 and U67. The Mic Shop MS47 needed a new tube so it had a messed up noise floor - but it might have been thicker than the Flea. Thought the stock Upton sounded much, much better than the Tele.

I will at some point, re-investigate the ELAM251 sound, [and purchase something in that vein] as well as the U67 sound...[which I don't really need since Parsons has a Demo U67RI unit I can use] but for now, I am extremely happy with the AEA 44, the InnerTube Audio U4700 and this Barbaric BA-49 for my applications. I have a friend with the Flea 49 [using their F7 cap] and it sounds magical.

So what is stopping people from making these and cloning the amplifier to make a DIY true KM84? Better yet. Why the hell is Neumann not just selling KM84s again god damn it instead of the terrible KM184 I would love to see them re-introduce the KM84 like they did with the U47FET and the U67 You do realize that's probably coming next, night? Sennheiser-Neumann finally woke up and realized other companies were 'eating their breakfast' and got to work on putting highly desirable products back on the market, where possible. We can only hope ! There are a couple of things that could keeps this from happening. 1 Something in there from Senn/ Neumann’s perspective is either to expensive or impossible to source. ( probably not a factor) 2 Some how the labor cost is to high to bring it to market (probably not a factor) 3. Marketing says another SDC from Neumann with 8 and or 4 will confuse to many people!

Hey Adam! Congrats!!!! Looks sweet. Can you mention the price? Or PM if necessary. Their website is pretty difficult to navigate.... A pair of M49's would make my day. Forget that - my year. Chris charges $350 for a custom mic build and then it comes down to what parts (capsule, body, transformer, tube) you want him to use and how much you can source them for. Example, you could buy a new Neumann capsule from Sennheiser and try to find an AC701k, and that would be a pretty expensive (but probably awesome sounding) build. Or get a capsule from Thiersch, Heiserman, Tim Campbell, or Dany Bouchard etc... There are cheapish generic Chinese bodies you can have him use or you can get something nicer like Beesneez. I've considered buying a used TLM49 and having him gut it and use the body and capsule for a build. If I recall I think my Barbaric M49 cost somewhere around $1400 all in, and funny enough mine used almost all different parts than Adam's: Dany Bouchard D7 capsule, Studio 939 CU49 mic body, Russian 6s6b-v tube (which I think is an awesome sleeper tube, and pretty inexpensive), and an AMI BV11R transformer. It's interesting that Adam's is using a BV8R transformer which is actually a U47 transformer. I would love to compare the sound of our two mics. I've been super happy with my Barbaric 49, and I've been loving it more the more I use it. I'm considering ponying up for an actual Neumann capsule one day and having Chris put that in there for me. Here is AMI's transformer price list and it also specifies which tubes are compatible with each and which mic style they are designed for: www.tab-funkenwerk.com/id53.htmlAnd there are lots of other companies making good transformers of course. Here is Studio 939's page where they sell lots of generic mic bodies and other parts: store.studio939.com/

Re: BV8R choice... I decided I did not want a 10:1 transformer in the mic, after listening and thinking about it a whole lot, So the AMI BV8R was a good choice, and seems to be a better match for the 5840W, impedance wise. It interacts with it on a very musical level, Chris had also told me this, so it confirmed my analysis over the years, I’ve heard the Bv11r in other mics and think it’s a nice option, but I really wanted a lower ratio and never planned on adding the AC701k,
I do still want to try the Haufe 6.5:1 option (my friend has that setup and it sounds pretty incredible) but I’m happy as hell with my choice so far. It was exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks DB! I DM'd you. I think this mic made my decade I'll vouch for Chris too, he's built me 3 mics, all really amazing. The first was a c37 clone which was cool with the cheapo capsule but when I found the proper capsule he updated it and it became something special. Granted the grille isn't anything like the original so it sounds different but I love it as it's to my c38 what my IO Audio 67 is to the 87. He then built me a 49 from the AMI kit, it's easily my favorite mic. Then for fun he built me one of his mini 47's as I had a Redline M7 left over from the 49 kit and a donor body. Another winner. Obviously I'm happy with the mics but equally so with how easy he is to work with, great guy.

Couldn't resist the Chandler TG Mic demo that came up on Sweetwater. Hell of a deal.
Also sent one of my H3000's to Studio Electronics for a complete workover. Can't wait to hear how that turns out.

Thanks--checking out Barbaric for the first time. In addition to custom mics they have fully assembled 67s and 49s for under 1K. Anyone have any experience with these?

Bought an Uno analog synth from IK on sale for $120. It comes with a choice of their software titles up to $199 and I was looking at picking up Syntronik anyway. Should be a fun little laptop synth/controller, I dig the stereo input for mixing VIs in with the synth output and the DAW plug-in editor is cool.

I don't, but I think trakworx (Justin) bought one. Maybe he can chime in. But Barbaric did recently revise those mics with some upgrades. They now use Maiku capsules instead of 3U, and AMI transformers instead of Cinemag. Those prices are super tempting.

But that may have changed? Regardless, I’ve heard they sound great.
