Arturia DrumBrute Impact and Moog Grandmother synth. I've been honing my guitar craft the last few years and wanted some nice analogue hardware to start laying backing tracks down. I come from an electronic/dance music background (started making Techno in 1992 on an Atari ST, and 15-20 years later had somehow accumulated 22u of modular synth!), and have this idea of melding Folk with analogue synths (The Incredible String Band meets Kraftwerk, if you will...) From around 2010 the mastering took over and was my main focus but I really want to start recording again. Anyway, I got the Drumbrute Impact about ten days ago, (preferred it's sounds, size, price and feature set to the original DrumBrute when I was watching demos), and it's the best hardware drum machine I have ever owned. It sounds great, very much has its own character, (which is what I was looking for, something like my old 606), and is extremely easy to program and get your head around. I love it so far. Only thing I don't like about it is how it looks, a bit plasticy/toy like, especially with all the blinky lights, but it seems solid enough and it was nice to be able to support a French company! As an aside, I haven't owned any synths since 2011, EXCEPT for a very brief period with an Elektron Analog Keys (four voice analogue synth and sequencer with keyboard tacked on), which I absolutely hated. I come from the original wave of analogue synths and drum machines, one knob per function etc., and found the Analog Keys to be completely impenetrable and non-intuitive. I know some people dig (and even love) the Elektron box interfaces, but it really wasn't for me. Which brings me on to the Moog Grandmother, which I bought last Wednesday. When I first saw it announced last year I thought it looked and sounded amazing, and have been lusting after one ever since. I had no keyboard in my studio, and wanted something for controlling soft synths. I like high quality Fatar keybeds. It's a Moog mono synth. It sounds amazing. It can be patched fully modular. It has a spring reverb (with its own patchable input and output for running external stuff through, it sounds great). It has an arpeggiator and sequencer. It can interface with everything. All the circuits are based on the old 900 range of Moog modular circuits from the 60's and 70's, except for the VCO which is based on the Minimoog/Voyager. Some people might say it's pricey compared to things like the Behringer Neutron (never bought B, never will...), but to acquire all this kit in individual module form would be orders of magnitude more expensive, not to mention would take up a lot more space. It just ticks all the boxes for me! I am blown away by this thing. It is hands down the best mono synth I have ever owned. I started my modular system around 2000 with a Moogerfooger filter pedal, before going down a decade long rabbit hole of creating a Frac Rack behemoth (all 22u of it now long since gone), and it is nice to come back full circle to this. Anyway, praise where praise is due, I am extremely happy with both these machines, and now just have to get my head around the logistics of getting them both to sync nicely together, and with REAPER! Hoping the MIDI via USB to both boxes will allow overdubs without any audible jitter in the timing etc. Now I am lusting after a nice analogue poly synth too, really want the OB6 but it is well expensive, so I might try and make do with Uhe Diva or Repro VST synths for now. And my KK84 capsules from Neumann are supposedly FINALLY shipping today (I ordered over two months ago...) agreed about the Moog Grandmother. An instant classic.

I received my Bumblebee RM-6 ribbon mic the other day and had it together in a few minutes. So far it's a great mic. It smoothes the top end a little more than my Royer R121 without being dark, but has a bigger low end bump than the R121 too, equaling a less pronounced midrange than the R121 altogether.
Also received my Neumann KH-310D pair. I'm still evaluating, but so far it's hitting all the right notes (pun intended).

Boss Katana 100 head
pretty cool swiss army knife kind of tool. Works as a loud normal amp with effects, or as a practice amp with the built in 4" speaker. Works as an acoustic guitar amp. Works as a "POD" for direct recording.
Got two more EV CO4 - these are my "secret weapon" cheap dynamic mics
Another Wolfbox - love these things
Slate Trigger 2 Eventide Instant Flanger Waves MV2 some of the Lindell stuff from Plugin Alliance - very cool plugins. Channel X and the "neve" diode compressor 254e.

I had a few of the PA Lindell plugins already and used the monthly voucher to add Channel X. The 245E is nice.
I ended up grabbing Fabfilter Pro-R and Pro D-S, couldn't pass up the normal user discount and the current sale.
Got news from Soyuz that my set of omni caps came in and are on the way for my 013's.

Definitely more decentter than the revisions. IMHO I heard someone else using one on snare and it just seemed to work, which was a selling point for me. I never liked the Beta57A on snare, and the SM57 has fallen out of favor for me once again.. Lets see if this beta57 knocks my current snare favorite, the ATM63HE, out.

The A versions don't have the humbucking coil as far as I can tell. The A capsule module looks like it's a lot easier(read: cheaper) to produce. Also, the non-A has a machined metal capsule cover, where the A version has the traditional formed-screen cover, so it's likely a lot cheaper to produce as well.

The original was made for snare drum duties, as it's first priority/objective! Very good on nasally vocals for live applications also

Yeah I assumed it was one of those manufacturing cost things, but I wish they would have reintroduced the original at a higher price point for those who loved it, pissed a lot of live guys off.

Grabbed some plug ins...AudioThing Speaker and Megaphone...and went to buy Klanghelm VUMT Deluxe but turns out I already bought it at some point. I think it’s the perfect first plugin on every track. VU meter, hi-pass filter, single band dynamic EQ, and a “mono maker” for stereo tracks which I find really useful for drum overheads...plus a phase flip and trim. klanghelm.com/contents/products/VUMT/VUMT.phpOh! And I found a matching floor tom for my pink oyster Slingerland kit

Is that blocking your whole window? No, just looks that way from the angle of the photo. Actually the same size as the two monitors I had side by side, but now no division in the middle. Still same view out the glass.

RCA 77-D.
One of those mics that's just a crazy experience to listen to, immediately recognizable classic sound. For better or worse! The SM57 of ribbons?(!) Poor analogy, but it is that sort of familiarity.

Oh forgot to mention, I just bought an Audio-Scape D-Comp .
I'll make further announcements when it arrives and after I start using it, like politicians . . . announce you're making an announcement, announce it, and then announce that you have made an announcement.
But YAY, D-COMP!!

Glad to add the new Audio-Scape V-Comp with a NOS 6386 tube to the rack. Also going to try some NOS RCA's in the 6V6 slots next week.
Let me know on the RCAs. Bowie mentioned he didn’t think NOS in other players would be much if any of a difference.

Will do John, I've been running behind but hope to pop them in, in the next day or two and try some before and after.

Interested to hear the change. Wonder if running the same file, same settings through different power tubes would yield a more concrete outcome?

Hey John and Indie, So here’s my two cents on the NOS power tubes knowing that no one hears things exactly the same. I bought 2 NOS NIB 6V6GT/G’s and tried the stock tubes first before and the NOS NIB tubes after leaving the settings the same, and to my ear there is definitely a difference and the NOS tubes are staying in there for me without question. I only gave the NOS NIB tubes 15 minutes to warm up but could already hear it was a better fit sonically for my taste even though the stock tubes were good. I found the mid’s and lower mid’s to be a little more forward in a richer way and got the impression the NOS tubes were a touch smoother. I guess as it should with NOS tubes in it, the unit also sounded a little more vintage to me as the first thought I had. Here’s a link to the NOS NIB pair I put in from eBay at link , there are more available there and other options online. I’d say if one is willing to pay $1200 for the unit, it’s worth spending $44 on these to try for yourself, you’ve got little to lose and more to gain in my opinion, — While there are different tube options out there, my understanding on the 6V6 tubes is some view the grey smokey glass that hides the black plates inside to be sonically superior to the clear ones. FWIW
