Just got a Universal Audio 4110 off Reverb. Initial tests show it to be great on drums and bass DI. The shape function really does make a big difference. Its great to have clean and vibe at the flick of a switch. The unit also looks killer in the rack. I used to have a Solo 110 I love that preamp.

Went on a little buying spree... Chandler TG mic Tektronix 2235 Oscilloscope Leader signal generator 3.5ghz 6 core Mac Pro with 64gigs ram If you include diy: finished a pair of km84 clones. The Banzai ones? How are you liking them? Waiting for some free time to build a couple kits with Haufe transformers.

I just did a little test with me playing guitar 😂 and they sounded good. Off axis was nice as well. I will get a better idea in 2 weeks, with a real guitar player.

So I’ve been playing with my new DBC-20 comp for about 2 days now and holy shit I love this thing. Elegent comes to mind, and super easy to dial in a good sound. Almost everything I ran through it sounded better. It’s got a subtle but meaningful color to it if that makes sense.
I feel like people should be talking about this piece more. I scored a used one (in amazing condition) for $1100 on reverb and feel like I just won the lottery.

Just got in a 1964 Fender Bandmaster guitar amp in great condition. Was gigged for about 20 years then just a home amp the last 30 or so ... this thins is the same age as me!! Sounds great on clean tones and there is a certain solidness no matter what I plug in but it seems to like the Strats best.

Buzz Audio stuff is well engineered and here in NZ where they're based, we love them.

Well my two Heiserman H47FETs are ready and paid for and on the way . . . will do a review once they arrive!
I have a feeling it's going to be pretty good.

Traded a snare for a Slingerland pink oyster floor tom to finish up my kit. This finish is rare so I’m excited to have tracked one down.

I had to search the Google webs for an IEC cable that fits this thing. Luckily I found an "oval" shaped Wurlitzer type plug. Hope it fires up. I was told these are great on snare. Attachments:

Filed under "deals I got on used 500-series gear", I picked up a pair of Pultecs locally about a month ago, and I just got a pair of Leviathans in this week: I had the feelers out looking for each of these used for a few months now, as I couldn't really justify buying new. The Pultecs do exactly what I expected, but I haven't had a chance to test out the Leviathan compressors yet.

Given my minimal experience with potential alternatives, I'm probably the wrong person to give an extensive, superlative-filled paragraph on the subject, so I'll keep it short. Having previously owned the big brother (Pulse Techniques EQP-1A), I'm perfectly happy with them for my use-case (tracking vocals and acoustic guitar). I wouldn't call the bigger brother objectively better, just slightly different. With the exception of the aspect of ease-of-control, where the big one wins hands-down. As far as 500-series EQs, I had previously been looking at the A-Designs EM-PEQ, which people seem to like, but I found a few comments from people who owned both and preferred the Pultec, and no one that felt the opposite way.

Arturia DrumBrute Impact and Moog Grandmother synth.
I've been honing my guitar craft the last few years and wanted some nice analogue hardware to start laying backing tracks down. I come from an electronic/dance music background (started making Techno in 1992 on an Atari ST, and 15-20 years later had somehow accumulated 22u of modular synth!), and have this idea of melding Folk with analogue synths (The Incredible String Band meets Kraftwerk, if you will...) From around 2010 the mastering took over and was my main focus but I really want to start recording again.
Anyway, I got the Drumbrute Impact about ten days ago, (preferred it's sounds, size, price and feature set to the original DrumBrute when I was watching demos), and it's the best hardware drum machine I have ever owned. It sounds great, very much has its own character, (which is what I was looking for, something like my old 606), and is extremely easy to program and get your head around. I love it so far. Only thing I don't like about it is how it looks, a bit plasticy/toy like, especially with all the blinky lights, but it seems solid enough and it was nice to be able to support a French company!
As an aside, I haven't owned any synths since 2011, EXCEPT for a very brief period with an Elektron Analog Keys (four voice analogue synth and sequencer with keyboard tacked on), which I absolutely hated. I come from the original wave of analogue synths and drum machines, one knob per function etc., and found the Analog Keys to be completely impenetrable and non-intuitive. I know some people dig (and even love) the Elektron box interfaces, but it really wasn't for me.
Which brings me on to the Moog Grandmother, which I bought last Wednesday. When I first saw it announced last year I thought it looked and sounded amazing, and have been lusting after one ever since. I had no keyboard in my studio, and wanted something for controlling soft synths. I like high quality Fatar keybeds. It's a Moog mono synth. It sounds amazing. It can be patched fully modular. It has a spring reverb (with its own patchable input and output for running external stuff through, it sounds great). It has an arpeggiator and sequencer. It can interface with everything. All the circuits are based on the old 900 range of Moog modular circuits from the 60's and 70's, except for the VCO which is based on the Minimoog/Voyager. Some people might say it's pricey compared to things like the Behringer Neutron (never bought B, never will...), but to acquire all this kit in individual module form would be orders of magnitude more expensive, not to mention would take up a lot more space. It just ticks all the boxes for me!
I am blown away by this thing. It is hands down the best mono synth I have ever owned. I started my modular system around 2000 with a Moogerfooger filter pedal, before going down a decade long rabbit hole of creating a Frac Rack behemoth (all 22u of it now long since gone), and it is nice to come back full circle to this.
Anyway, praise where praise is due, I am extremely happy with both these machines, and now just have to get my head around the logistics of getting them both to sync nicely together, and with REAPER! Hoping the MIDI via USB to both boxes will allow overdubs without any audible jitter in the timing etc.
Now I am lusting after a nice analogue poly synth too, really want the OB6 but it is well expensive, so I might try and make do with Uhe Diva or Repro VST synths for now.
And my KK84 capsules from Neumann are supposedly FINALLY shipping today (I ordered over two months ago...)

I can reliably record at a 64 buffer. That was the most important factor I was looking for. Not having to kill a session just to do overdubs is a big time saver.

I was recently offered a 5.1 3'46 32Gb for a great price and I was in doubt if it would run 24 audio tracks with sparse FX, lots of automation and hardware inserts

I was debating between a new mini and jumping to the high end NUC. But ultimately the Motu stability and thunderbolt 2 connectivity won out.

I got the Lindell 245e diode bridge compressor plugin.
Don't usually like compressors on electric guitar but this one sounds great. Also wonderful on the drum bus.
So yeah initially very happy with the plug.
