Lucked out and just had to spend the $$$$ even though I wasn't expecting it. I was presented with an opportunity to purchase one of the last Serpent SA3a's that Mike made. It came up FS from one of our friends here who bought too many. LOL So now, I'll have 4 channels of Serpent 3a's, 4 channels of Serpent Splice 1176's, and 2 channels of Serpent SSL comps. Whoohoooo!!! I love me some Serpent comps!

I just paired up my Midas 512 EQ so now I have two channels of that. It's a really effective hardware EQ. The first thing I "love" it on is bass guitar DI, just perfect for sculpting a bass tone.

I'm not sure if you'd consider it "gear" exactly, but I recently was the recipient of about 30 reels of 3M 996 2" tape, plus a few reels of assorted Ampex for free. I'm not real excited about the Ampex, as in my experience it has lots of problems with sticky shed that I don't want to deal with, but to date I've never had a bad reel of 996, so I'm pretty happy about that. Have not had a chance to check it for wear and splices, but I'm told that there should be plenty that's in good shape. With the cost of tape these days it's score - new 2" runs around $300-$350 a reel from most dealers and Tape-Tape in LA is getting about 90 bucks a reel for used one-pass 996! Last time I bought from them about 2-3 years ago it was around $70, IIRC.
The Ampex will probably get stripped for the reels...
I bought about 10x 2" BASF 456 for 100$ a year ago. Someone gave me two reels of 996. It seems a lot thicker than the 456. I have maybe 5 reels of Ampex, one had sticky-shed, but the rest are OK. Seems there were years of bad and years of good with Ampex more than the others.

I have hundreds of rolls of 2" Ampex tape. I don't know about the good or bad years of sticky tape but I have found that that reels of tape that were stored in the original plastic bags faired a lot better than the ones that were not. Most people threw the bags away. Also the ones in the plastic containers stored in the plastic bags faired the best. The sticky tape syndrome comes from inproper storage and moisture absorption. I've got a special convection oven just for baking tapes. If I knew you were coming I'd have baked a tape.

"Any day now", expecting arrival of an Oktava 319. I can certainly understand how a pro commercial recording studio, would gravitate towards the "ol reliable" U87. But there's something in that "grab bag" inconsistency of the Oktava 219/319, that appeals to the enthusiast in me. Plus the flexibility of potential mod options too.
Could just sound good, could just sound great, sorta thing, and the price was right-$120. Chris

Bought a Shure SM7b. Bought it because I had a screaming rock singer with no bottom end in his voice. It helped add some girth and growl.

Latch Lake MicKing 2200. Seriously??? This thing could hurt someone. Man i wish I had two of those. I have to put salt bags that I use for my soft water conditioner to keep my overhead stands from falling over.

Pulled the trigger on an Innertube Audio Squeezebox. Loved the IT 87 mod I had for years and have always been curious about the ASB. Should arrive next week.

I bought a broken DBX 161...hoping it’s an easy fix (passes signal, but doesn’t compress). Also, a blue sparkle Slingerland 50’s set. Needs a couple things (one bass drum hoop and spurs) but should have it up and running shortly. Otherwise just been purging excess stuff. I’d like to buy an acoustic guitar. Thinking a Guild F30. Also been chipping away at making my basement into a mixing space. I found a GIK room kit on Craigslist for $200 and that’s all on the other side. Going to order a couple custom panels to cover that back wall (which will be behind the console) and buy or build a few 2” panels for a cloud (ceiling is 86” so can’t have anything thick up there)

Moog Moogerfooger MF-103 Phaser and CP-251 Control Processor, gonna pick up the MF-101 Low Pass Filter next week (used to have one, it's the thing that started my whole modular addiction around 2000). Nice to get back into modular style stuff, having fun running the acoustic through it. Want to find the MF-107 Freq Box if I can too, but been out of production a while now.

I've got my 4th Supro Guitar coming in this week. A little hurricane medicine to make me feel better, hehe.

Almost pulled the trigger on a pair last year. Will do. I've wondered about it forever and found one for a great price the same time I sold some other gear so figured it's about time.

I picked up a Larrivee OM-03R...haven't owned an acoustic in a long time. I like it, don't love it, but maybe it just needs to open up a little bit more. It's not dull, but it's definitely not sparkly. Just not in love with the way the low E sounds.
I also just threw down on a new set of ATC SCM12 Pros. Sweetwater had some very generous financing and no one could beat their price. Ready to just have one set of speakers to use at home.

I picked up a Larrivee dreadnaught at a shop in Black Mountain a few months ago. I didn't love it either.
It's so hard to pick out an acoustic guitar.

There's a guitar player I record often who has a 000 Larrivee that sounds beautiful...and he's had everything from pre-war D18's to modern boutique stuff. This one just doesn't have the magic. But, I haven't owned an acoustic in years so I'm going to enjoy it for now

I picked up a Larrivee dreadnaught at a shop in Black Mountain a few months ago. I didn't love it either. It's so hard to pick out an acoustic guitar. Funny . . . the main 4 acoustics that get work in my studio (house guitars) are 1. 2007 Yamaha LL11 (used on the bay for under a grand) 2. 1973 Martin D28 (buys 4 Yammahas) 3. Gibson's 2000 historic reissue version of the J45. (buys 6 Yamaha's) 4. 2015 Martin 000-16 (buys 3 Yamahas) Funny how we often equate price with value. That Yammy blows my mind when recorded. But I don't enjoy just playing it

Right now I play a Taylor 114e and a bunch of cheap but cheerful guitars because I haven't saved up for a D28 yet.
