....ultimately, I find all the 40xx series has a kind of plastic'y quality. This goes out to anybody who understands this concept: What does plastic sound like? I ask this because there was a mention in another thread about how plug ins make the sound plastic'y. So, I'm curious to understand this concept. I'm not trying to be a pain, I'd really like to understand what seems to be a common acoustic term.

All dancing about architecture.
How could I describe with words how something sounds and have it be meaningful? The best I can do is that there is a sound that comes from passing audio through inexpensive circuits. And that doesn't mean inexpensive gear--I think Distressors sound COMPLETELY that way....Mackie...almost any interface preamp will give a certain amount of this sound....the same way that a classA tube line/mic amp will saturate in the midrange in the way it does? These are non linear in the midrange in a different way. That way, I deem "plasticy"....You are best to use a second layer of saturation at the preamp stage, then said sound is diminished or covered over completely.

I equate plastic sounding with preamps like my awesome Toft units i have owned which is clean sounding and then getting a Grace 201 preamp and then discovering what clean sounds like and now the Toft sounds plastic to me. Its like a coloured version of a clean sound without having a weight to the sound. Most times a nice transofrmer pre gives you a weighted sounded. Eg Neve., Api,
