yup desoldering is harder than soldering. but it's not so bad if you have the right tools and supplies!

Don't get too discouraged! The first one I built for myself gave me some problems, after I had it sorted every time I used my pair of 28's in the studio I had people asking me to build some kits for them.
I've put about 15 of them together so far, and each one goes quicker and quicker (they look nicer too haha). Spread the CAPI love!

I usually suck at getting things done fast haha, but i think i built kidvybes vp28 in an hour and a 1/2! , speaks to the laser precision of Jeff's kits, That said, i've embarrassingly had other peoples projects for very long amounts of time, ya'll know who you are, and i'm sorry.... though you ultimately won't be, I have a borderline obsessive compulsive disorder, no joke. The good news is they are finally on the verge of being finished, and off my plate, now if I can just keep myself from being distracte....., hey! look squirrel!

"The good news is they are finally on the verge of being finished, and off my plate, now if I can just keep myself from being distracte....., hey! look squirrel! " this is just so hilarious, man. I so believe that: man is the creature that loves to be distracted.

yup desoldering is harder than soldering. but it's not so bad if you have the right tools and supplies! Agreed! If you plan to keep DIY'ing then the right tools are essential. Although I have a manual desoldering sucker it is really only practical for occasional use. If you have a lot of desoldering I would not tackle it without a proper desoldering station. I recently replaced a bunch of Molex connectors on a Neotek Elite master section motherboard. I bought one of these for around $130 USD rhinotools.com.au/product/desoldering-station/Without it the job would have not only been a long winded nightmare but I would have no doubt damaged some of the pads.

I have this, and it works incredibly well! It's indispensable, and i'd pay 4 times the price to own one.

When my 3rd 808 started to die, I spent mid 500 hundreds on this Edsyn unit. I would thoroughly recommend it. I have been using it for as long as the three 808's and it works as good today as it did when I got it. I use is a lot though so its a little above a hobby for me. I guess I fuck up a lot

Hey jsteiger - aren't the EQ's a more difficult build?

Hey jsteiger - aren't the EQ's a more difficult build? If you mean the LC53A I wouldn't say they're more difficult as long as you are prepared for a longer build time. I would guess 2 to 3 times the build time of a VP28. They're only likely to appear difficult if you get impatient. Just don't be in too much of a hurry and it will be fine.

Testing the limits of Tony's prowess. I'm not sure if i said this earlier, but my first impression of your work was, not bad at all, especially considering the sub par tools you say you were dealing with. Just by looking at it, i think its going to be a cold solder joint, specifically in the receiver op amp female pin area, the big heavy ones on the main board, we'll know soon.

So - here's the update. Jeff got her going! And it wasn't my shitty build!! Jeff can correct me if I'm not describing this correctly, but it ended up being a short to ground on the trace right after the Fader. It was the little hole that sends the output of the fader to the HPF. Jeff drilled out the top and lo and behold...I'm ready to build some more!

BTW, Jeff no longer uses that company for circuit boards.

Johnkenn, I feel your pain on these vp28's! It's actually a pretty straightforward build, but compared to a lot of them, I had to get used to using the BOM for everything where most kits I've done R values were printed on the board and I could just look at it, figure out the color coding and move on. I'm just about done one of the preamps, after looking for a couple diodes for half an hour that I thought I'd lost, tearing everything apart, then realize they'd been removed for the B.1. Man did I feel dumb.
I bought a bunch of 8 pin sockets, so I'm adding that part back into the build. If that's a bad idea, that's cool, I just hate applying heat to IC's that I don't know anything about (who knows, there may be a mod for my clone! ha)
Real satisfying once together though! I'm about 4 hours in. Second one will definitely be quicker.

I love the CAPI kits, they just strike me as being really refined and overbuilt. Can't wait to try one of the newer ones. Mine are all several years older right now.
