Late last year I posted about advice on how to track a band that insisted in tracking in one room. Based on that advice I did my best to try to control the bleed, but it was a live room and the bleed is in every instrument with the drums particularly strong in the piano. Thanks to everybody who gave advice on how to minimize the bleed.
Anyway, embracing the bleed that happened anyway, here's the mix. The guy ran out of money. So, we're just getting busy mixing now.
I will say this: It was cool doing something completely retro. The drums, piano, bass are all live with bleed in each of the mics. This is real music. No software based correction on anything. I thought the musicians did a nice job of swinging the groove.
Thanks to anybody who has ideas/advice on improving the mix.

Sounds great! The only thing I hear is that the voice is a bit shouty. There are a couple frequencies that jump out when he hits them.

Missing a little bass note fundamental here to my ears. You get that with slap bass and I always use an amp (iso'd) and a pair of live mics to make sure I get it. You might be able to re-amp the upright bass through an amp and clean up the definition if you are so inclined. I am with Svart, bury the vocal a bit more, hit it with some quick slapback delay and more echo type verb to take it the rest of the way into retro-ville if that is the mission intention. The piano and everything else is spot on and sounds great otherwise. 99% there!

Cool mix. Most things already said. I really dig the live/room feeling. Maybe even -because- of the bleed? Whatever, it has a vibe that fits the style and a kind of depth i really like. Great job.

I thought the voice was a bit loud as well. So, I'll pull the fader back back. It already has a Waves H Delay slap back. Not sure if they did mono or stereo slap back (tape delay?) back then. I have a bit of an UA EMT 250 plate on it now, but I'll revisit it. Tweaking the 250 plugin so as to not get too much bass or high end decay is tricky with their controls. I may look into using an EQ after the plug to see if I can get more control as I move it back. The singer is definitely influenced by Elvis. So, I may need to listen to more of those recordings. I tried to minimize the bleed by EQ'ing the mics, but the mix sounded thinner, mostly due to when you EQ the piano player's mics in the low end to try to get the drums out then you're taking out his left hand. So, it sounded much better leaving it alone. You can hear the piano players foot tapping throughout the song coming through the drum overheads. These blues/swing guys are really interesting. To them, music ended in the 50's. They speak their own language and lock in really well. I call them a band, but they were an ad hoc band of really good players who came in for the session. I envy that era, which was a pure live-musician time. Happy to be a small part of moving that heritage forward in time. After the session, the drummer visited a local drum teacher who was a pretty big deal back in the day. So, that was a cool part of history for me as well.

Sounds great! Love the one room sound. I do agree about the bass and lead vocal. The vocal is maybe a little loud or perhaps a little bright at times. Also felt the piano sounded a bit bright/harsh when banging on the upper register. Overall, really nice!
