U have Scott's yet to be released 1731s? have u tried them in any pres or? Feedback mon! I had just enough NOS output transistors to make some for Noah and Dan Deurloo to test out. I then spent a few weeks on the quest to try to buy bulk amounts of them. Not an easy task. Some of the surplus parts vendors don't make it easy to do business with them. I look forward to hearing the feedback once everyone tries them out. Did you get a pile of em?

2000 NPN transistors and about 1300 PNP. That's all they had at one place. I thought I'd start with that and see how people like them. If those make the cut, then I'll be hunting down a lot more. My version uses 2 output transistors per rail (4 total), so that eats them up in a hurry.
The sad thing is most through-hole transistors are discontinued. Not just the old ones from the 70s, some that were made up until a few years ago are now gone. Just about every month I get a notice from Digi-key or Mouser that some part I've been buying for years is now discontinued by the manufacturer. The hard reality is smart phones and TVs are what govern the semi-conductor trade. Us audio guys are just not worth their time. You can still find most of them, but the brokers and surplus places are jacking up the price to ridiculous amounts in some cases.

Not long before tubes are cheaper than through hole transistors and IC's.

It seems like transistors with enough airflow, like your designs, can last decades though right? My red dot stash will probably outlive me! It'll for sure out live all the relays in the 1608;-)

It could be the switches that activate the relay coils that are crapping out? How old is your 1608?

I think it's the sound of them all clicking when you power the console down that SOUNDS like they're gonna break. The console actually hasn't given me any problems...just goofin.

Noah, try the 1731's you got from Scott's in your ACA portion of the summing buss. I tested a number of different options and I found I really liked the ACA with the 1731's and Red Dots in the booster. It is a very balanced and tight with plenty of mojo.
Also, swapping the positions of the 1731's and the red dots made a pretty big difference to the sound. I was shocking actually, so you should try it the other way as well. You may prefer that.

We're getting close to figuring out the 2 bus mods for the console. At that point I'll be buying another batch of amps from Scott and I'll definitely be trying some 1731s there!

Love to see you doing this brother.... 1731's are my fav, Red Dot's after that. I really want to try Scott's new 1731's... that opamp in general is just a very balanced and pleasant sound. The VP28's I run on the buss have a mix of Gary's 2520's and his 1731's and there is something about mixing them together that creates a really kick ass sound. I'm def following your progress here, I'm sure you're blown away by the difference in that console.

Forgive my ignorance here but when I order 1731's from CAPI's web page, which type of 1731 am I receiving?
BTW - I have my 1st FC526 with all 1731's coming this week. Pretty damn excited about this one...

So GAR stands for Gary I assume? Thanks T. Yes. Gary's handle on groupdiy is gar381 so it was only fitting that his opamp kits be called gar1731 and gar2520
